Collect Pond Park, known for being a focal point for protesters, journalists, and onlookers throughout the trial, witnessed a disturbing scene around 1:30 p.m. Friday. A man, reportedly having arrived from Florida to New York in recent days, distributed pamphlets filled with conspiracy theories before setting himself ablaze with an accelerant. Despite the proximity of numerous police officers, the man's actions took everyone by surprise. Immediate efforts by officers and bystanders were made to assist him; however, he was later hospitalized in critical condition.

The NYPD is now re-evaluating its security arrangements outside the courthouse and in the surrounding areas. Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey expressed deep concern over the incident and assured that a thorough review of security protocols is underway. Up until Friday, access around the courthouse had been relatively unrestricted, except for a side street used by Trump and an enforced security checkpoint within the courthouse itself.

This unsettling event has raised questions about public safety and security at high-profile trials, especially in locations that become magnets for varied public activities. The NYPD's forthcoming decisions on security measures will be closely watched as they balance public access with safety concerns.
