Arrest Details

According to Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen, the suspect, identified as 33-year-old Jaremy Smith from Marion, South Carolina, was located on the outskirts of a residential area in the southwestern part of Albuquerque. As officers pursued him on foot, Smith sustained injuries from gunfire. He was subsequently taken to a local hospital under police guard, and his medical condition has not been disclosed.

Investigation Underway

State Police Chief Troy Weisler stated that an investigation is currently underway to ascertain Smith's movements since the fatal shooting of State Police Officer Justin Hare on Friday, March 15. Officer Hare was tragically killed along Interstate 40 west of Tucumcari while assisting a motorist in a white BMW with a flat tire. The investigation aims to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the incident and the suspect's actions.

Incident Details

Authorities revealed that Officer Hare responded to a call about a stranded motorist in a white BMW on I-40 at approximately 5 am on Friday. Upon arriving at the scene and parking behind the BMW, a man exited the vehicle, approached the patrol car's passenger side, and unexpectedly shot Officer Hare. The assailant then proceeded to the driver's side, shot Officer Hare again, and pushed him into the back seat before fleeing in the police vehicle.

Subsequent investigations revealed that the white BMW had been reported missing in South Carolina and belonged to a woman named Phonesia Machado-Fore, who was found deceased in the state.

Legal Representation

At the time of reporting, it remained unclear whether Smith had legal representation. Attempts to reach the public defender's office for comments were unsuccessful.
