Russian Tanker Splits In Storm, Spills Oil In Kerch Strait Waterway Connecting Black Sea & Sea of Azov

A Russian oil tanker, the Volgoneft 212, split in two during a fierce storm in the Kerch Strait on December 15. This incident resulted in an oil spill and the death of at least one crew member. The tanker, carrying thousands of tonnes of fuel oil, broke apart with its bow sinking. The ship was built in 1969 and had 15 crew members aboard.

Environmental Concerns and Response

The spill has sparked worries about environmental damage in the Kerch Strait, a crucial link between the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. Russian authorities have not yet provided an assessment of the spill's impact. The aging vessels involved highlight risks associated with old tankers facing harsh weather conditions.

Another tanker, Volgoneft 239, was also damaged and left adrift in the same area. Built in 1973, this vessel has a crew of 14 and can carry around 4,200 tonnes of oil products. Both ships fly the Russian flag. The federal shipping agency Rosmorrechflot confirmed that petroleum products were spilled due to the storm.

Search and Rescue Efforts

Russia's Emergency Ministry deployed over 50 personnel along with equipment like Mi-8 helicopters and rescue tugboats to assist in the area. The Kommersant newspaper reported that Volgoneft 212 was transporting approximately 4,300 tonnes of fuel oil when it split apart. However, official statements did not specify the extent of the spill or why such severe damage occurred.

Unverified footage on Telegram showed stormy seas with blackened water and a partially submerged tanker. This incident underscores potential dangers posed by aging oil tankers operating under challenging weather conditions.

The Kerch Strait incident highlights ongoing concerns about maritime safety and environmental protection in regions prone to severe weather. As investigations continue, authorities are expected to address these issues to prevent future occurrences.
