Russia Welcomes Syria's New Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani for First Diplomatic Meeting Post-Assad

Syria's Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani visited Russia for the first time since Assad's ouster, aiming to strengthen ties and address challenges.

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani visited Moscow, marking the first trip by a member of Syria's new government to Russia since former President Bashar Assad was overthrown last year. This visit underscores Russia's intent to establish relations with Syria's new leadership. Al-Shibani met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin, as reported by Syrian news agency SANA.

Before meeting Putin, al-Shibani held discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Lavrov expressed Russia's desire for Syria to overcome its challenges and restore normalcy. Al-Shibani conveyed Syria's interest in maintaining ties with Russia, stating that they want Russia "by our side." Despite being on opposing sides during the civil war, Syria's interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa has adopted a pragmatic stance towards Moscow.

Focus on Cooperation and Stability

Al-Shibani urged Russia to support Syria's "transitional justice" process following Assad's departure. He mentioned that Syria has formed a committee to review past agreements with Russia. The new Syrian leadership is keen on fostering cooperation with Moscow, despite the previous conflicts during the civil war.

Russia has maintained its military presence at air and naval bases along the Syrian coast. The Kremlin hopes to negotiate an agreement to retain these outposts. Additionally, reports suggest that Moscow has sent oil shipments to Syria, indicating continued economic ties between the two nations.

Defence and Regional Security

During his visit, al-Shibani was accompanied by Syrian Defence Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra. They met with Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov to discuss defence cooperation and Middle Eastern security issues. The Russian Defence Ministry highlighted these discussions as crucial for regional stability.

Lavrov thanked Syrian officials for ensuring the safety of Russian citizens and facilities in Syria. He reiterated Russia's commitment to supporting Syria's unity, territorial integrity, and independence. Lavrov also pledged assistance for post-conflict reconstruction efforts in Syria.

Addressing External Interference

Syria's interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa expressed gratitude towards Russia for opposing Israeli strikes and violations of Syrian sovereignty. Al-Shibani criticised Israel's interference in Syria's internal affairs, stating it complicates conflict resolution among different communities.

"Many countries want stability and security in Syria," al-Shibani said, "but some aim for a weak and divided Syria." He added that Syria harbours no hostile intentions towards Israel and seeks only to rebuild after 14 years of war.

The recent visit highlights the evolving dynamics between Syria and Russia as both nations navigate post-Assad relations. With ongoing dialogue and cooperation, they aim to address regional challenges while ensuring stability and security in the Middle East.
