Ruby Dhalla: The Lady Trump of Canada? Indian-origin 'Controversial' PM Candidate Draws Comparisons to Trump
Indian-origin Canadian politician Ruby Dhalla has stirred up controversy with her bid to become the next leader of the Liberal Party, positioning herself as a potential Prime Ministerial candidate. Dhalla, who has served three terms as a Member of Parliament, is being compared to former US President Donald Trump for her strong stance on illegal immigration. Many have already started to call her the Lady Trumop of Canada.
Dhalla recently made headlines for her bold declaration on X, formerly Twitter, stating, "As Prime Minister, I will deport illegal immigrants and clamp down on human traffickers." This statement, described by critics as "Trump-like," has drawn mixed reactions across Canada. Dhalla's campaign has further emphasised her commitment to immigration reform as a central pillar of her leadership agenda.

The former MP, born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, later moved to Ontario, where she built her career as a chiropractor before entering politics. She describes herself as a "self-made businesswoman and entrepreneur" dedicated to the values of the Liberal Party and the nation.
In a campaign release, Dhalla said, "I look forward to standing up and fighting for Canada," highlighting her vision for a better future. If elected, Dhalla would make history as Canada's first Prime Minister of colour.

Her political career and leadership bid, however, face stiff competition. Other notable contenders include former Bank of Canada and Bank of England Governor Mark Carney. As Canada prepares for months of campaigning, Dhalla's controversial statements have put her at the forefront of public discourse, with both supporters and detractors weighing in.
While Dhalla's campaign team focuses on her historic achievements, critics argue her rhetoric could deepen divisions on sensitive issues like immigration. Her supporters, however, praise her for taking a firm stance on human trafficking and border security.
Dhalla, who is no stranger to the spotlight, made history as the first woman of Indian origin to serve multiple terms as a Canadian MP. Her political journey is being closely watched as Canada braces for a leadership transition, with the Liberal Party set to decide its leader before the country votes for its next Prime Minister.
The debate over Dhalla's policies has also reached international circles. South of the border, former US President Donald Trump has mocked Canada, suggesting it could become America's "51st state." Dhalla's campaign, however, focuses on positioning her as a leader ready to defend Canada's sovereignty and prosperity.
As Canada navigates this critical political moment, Dhalla's candidacy underscores the evolving face of leadership in the country - and the challenges that come with it.
