Dhaka, Nov 3: At a time when the international community, including the United States and China, has supported the stand of Bangladesh for "safe, sustainable and dignified" repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar, the major roadblock lies in the fact that Myanmar is yet to admit that the minority Muslim community members are its own citizens.

At least 605,000 Rohingyas have fled from Myanmar to Bangladesh to avoid violence and persecution in their homeland since violence broke out on August 25.

On Thursday, Myanmar's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi decided to visit violence-hit Rakhine State, where majority of Rohingyas stay, for the first time. Talks are also on between Bangladesh and Myanmar on the issue of repatriation of Rohingya refugees.

According to reports, Myanmar has agreed to take back at least 150 to 300 Rohingyas on a daily basis, provided they have valid papers.

Bangladesh Ambassador to the US Mohammad Ziauddin in an interview to VOA described the violence against the Rohingya minority as "ethnic cleansing". He said the Rohingyas are "Myanmar nationals," and it is a mistake to call them Bangladeshis.

When asked about if it is a mistake on the part of Myanmar government to call Rohingyas as Bangladeshi nationals, Ziauddin said, "Yes, of course."

Regarding the issue of Bangladesh being open to letting Rohingyas be citizens of the country, if they choose to, Ziauddin stated that "the Rohingyas are Myanmar nationals".

"It is always preferable that they should go back to their own home from where they came. This is where they built their roots so they like to go back to their roots. For that, we need to have a proper environment. And I am sure with Myanmar, we have a really good relationship.

"This, also we believe, is on the basis of this kind of relationship that we have; historically, we will be able to resolve this. I believe Myanmar is going to see sense in taking them back. And these people will definitely go back, once they get the sense of confidence of returning, once they see that the environment is very friendly now," he added.
