Rocket Attack on Golan Heights Soccer Field Kills 10, Netanyahu Returns

A rocket attack on a soccer field in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights killed at least 10 people and injured several others, including children, Israel reported. This incident occurred hours after an Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon killed three Hezbollah members. The attack is the deadliest on an Israeli target since the conflict between the two adversaries began in October, raising concerns about a wider regional conflict.

Golan Heights Attack Kills 10

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was returning from the United States as quickly as possible, according to his office. The Israeli military stated that intelligence indicated Hezbollah was responsible for the rocket launch targeting Majdal Shams. Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari told journalists, "Hezbollah is lying," asserting that all 10 victims were aged between 10 and 20 years old, with over 20 others wounded.

Hezbollah's Retaliation

Hezbollah claimed responsibility for striking a military base in the Golan Heights in retaliation for Israeli attacks on a Lebanese village. However, Hezbollah chief spokesman Mohammed Afif denied any involvement in the Majdal Shams attack. "The group categorically denies carrying out an attack on Majdal Shams," he told The Associated Press.

Israel's Magen David Adom paramedic service initially reported 11 people wounded, nine critically, all aged between 10 and 20. Footage aired by Israeli Public Broadcaster Kan showed some victims being rushed to ambulances from the soccer field in Majdal Shams. "These were kids at a soccer field," Beni Ben Muvchar, head of the local council, told Israeli Channel 12. "Today a red line was crossed," he said, urging Israeli leaders to target top Hezbollah commanders.

Escalating Conflict

The Israeli military identified one projectile crossing from Lebanon toward the area and cooperated with MDA to evacuate the wounded. Channel 12 broadcasted footage of a large explosion in one of the town's valleys. Hezbollah stated its militants fired Katyusha rockets at an Israeli army post in the Golan Heights in response to Israeli airstrikes on villages in southern Lebanon.

Earlier on Saturday, Hezbollah reported that three of its members were killed without specifying the location. Israel's military confirmed its air force targeted a Hezbollah arms depot in Kfar Kila, stating that militants were inside at the time. The Golan Heights were captured by Israel from Syria during the 1967 Mideast war and annexed in 1981.

Ongoing Hostilities

Since early October, Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon have killed over 450 people, mostly Hezbollah members, but also around 90 civilians and non-combatants. On the Israeli side, before Saturday's attack, 21 soldiers and 13 civilians had been killed. The exchange of fire along the Lebanon-Israel border has intensified with Israeli airstrikes and rocket and drone attacks by Hezbollah reaching deeper into each other's territories.

Israel and Hezbollah have been exchanging near-daily fire since the war in Gaza began following Hamas' surprise attack on October 7, which killed approximately 1,200 people and took 250 others hostage. Israel's subsequent offensive has resulted in over 39,000 deaths according to local health authorities, displaced more than 80% of Gaza's population, and caused a humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.

The recent escalation highlights the fragile situation in the region and underscores the potential for further violence if diplomatic efforts are not intensified to de-escalate tensions between Israel and Hezbollah.
