Gaza Hospital Updates Casualty Figures from Israeli School Strike

The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in the Gaza Strip has revised its records to reflect a lower number of women and children among the casualties of an Israeli strike on a school-turned-shelter. The Israeli military claims that it carried out a precise strike on three classrooms in the U.N.-run school, where it says around 30 Palestinian militants were planning attacks. The initial report from the hospital stated that nine women and 14 children were among the 33 people killed in the strike. However, the revised records show that three women, nine children, and 21 men were among the dead. The reason for the discrepancy is unclear at this time. This incident is the latest in a series of mass casualties among Palestinians seeking refuge as Israel continues its offensive in Gaza. The Israeli military recently announced a new ground and air assault in central Gaza, targeting Hamas militants who it claims have regrouped in the area. Despite Israel's ongoing campaign, Hamas has shown resilience, with troops repeatedly re-entering parts of the Gaza Strip they have previously invaded. The strike on the school occurred at the al-Sardi School, which is run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA). The school was housing Palestinians who had fled Israeli operations and bombardment in northern Gaza. Witnesses and hospital officials reported that the strike hit classrooms on the second and third floors, where families were seeking shelter. One displaced individual described the chaotic scene, with victims being carried out of the dark classrooms amidst a lack of electricity. The Israeli military spokesperson, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, stated that the strike was based on concrete intelligence that militants were using those specific classrooms to plan and conduct attacks. Hagari claimed that only those rooms were targeted and that there were approximately 30 suspected militants inside. The military confirmed killing nine of them but provided no additional evidence to support their claims. The casualties from the strike were taken to the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, which was already overwhelmed by the influx of ambulances due to the ongoing incursion in central Gaza. Videos circulating online showed wounded individuals being treated on the floor of the hospital, highlighting the strain on Gaza's medical facilities. The hospital records, along with an Associated Press reporter, documented at least 33 deaths from the strike, including 14 children and nine women. Another strike on a house in Nuseirat resulted in six deaths. The situation in Gaza remains dire, with thousands of people seeking shelter in UNRWA schools throughout the territory. Philippe Lazzarini, the commissioner-general of UNRWA, stated that 6,000 people were sheltering in the school that was hit without any prior warning. UNRWA schools have been functioning as shelters since the start of the conflict, as most of Gaza's population has been displaced from their homes. This recent strike follows a previous incident where an UNRWA facility in Rafah was hit by Israeli strikes, resulting in a fire that killed at least 45 people. The cause of the fire has not been determined, but Israel has attributed it to secondary explosions. The international community expressed outrage over the incident, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu referred to it as a "tragic mishap."The conflict between Israel and Hamas shows no signs of abating, with both sides holding firm to their demands. The United States has supported a phased cease-fire and hostage release plan proposed by President Joe Biden. However, Israel insists on destroying Hamas before ending the war, while Hamas demands a lasting cease-fire and the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces. The situation remains tense, with far-right members of Netanyahu's government threatening to bring down the coalition if he agrees to a cease-fire deal.Israel's offensive in Gaza has resulted in significant destruction and loss of life. The military has conducted airstrikes throughout the territory and carried out extensive ground operations in Gaza City and Khan Younis. Refugee camps, such as Bureij and Jabalia, have also been targeted, causing widespread destruction. The battles have claimed the lives of hundreds of Palestinians, mostly women and children. As the conflict continues, the international community calls for a peaceful resolution that will bring an end to the violence and suffering in Gaza. The situation remains fluid, with the hope that diplomatic efforts will lead to a lasting cease-fire and a path towards peace for both Israelis and Palestinians.
