Protesters in Slovakia Criticise Prime Minister Fico's Visit to Moscow Amid Controversy

Protesters gathered in Slovakia's capital on Friday to voice their disapproval of Prime Minister Robert Fico's recent visit to Russia. Fico was the sole leader from an EU nation to attend Moscow's events commemorating the 80th anniversary of Nazi Germany's defeat in World War II. Demonstrators filled Freedom Square, chanting slogans such as "We've had enough of Fico," "Slovakia is Europe," and "Stay there."

Slovakia Protests Against Ficos Moscow Trip

Opposition Criticism and Public Sentiment

Organisers of the protest expressed that Fico does not represent all Slovakians. Michal Simecka, leader of the opposition Progressive Slovakia party, criticised the trip, calling it a disgrace for Slovakia and a low point for its foreign policy. The sentiment among protesters was that Fico's actions were not in line with Slovakia's European identity.

Fico's Stance on Russia

Fico defended his visit to Russia through a video message, stating his aim was to foster "normal, friendly cooperation" with the country. His pro-Russian stance has been evident since he returned to power in 2003 after his Smer Direction party won elections on a platform opposing American influence and supporting Russia.

Putin's Remarks and Russian Celebrations

During the annual "Victory Day" celebrations, President Vladimir Putin praised Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine. He stated, "We are proud of their courage and determination, their spiritual force that always has brought us victory." The Kremlin uses these celebrations to highlight its military achievements.

Protests Across Slovakia

The demonstrations in Bratislava and other Slovak towns were part of ongoing protests against Fico's Moscow trip. His discussions with Putin included talks about gas deliveries scheduled for December. These protests reflect growing dissatisfaction with Fico's foreign policy decisions.

Fico remains a polarising figure both domestically and internationally due to his pro-Russian views and challenges to EU policies regarding Ukraine. His recent actions have intensified public discontent, leading to widespread protests across Slovakia.
