Protesters Across Greece and Abroad Demand Justice for Victims of 2023 Rail Disaster

In Greece, tens of thousands gathered in 110 cities, including 13 international locations, to seek justice for the 57 victims of the country's deadliest rail disaster in 2023. The largest demonstrations occurred in Athens and Thessaloniki, each drawing around 30,000 participants. Although mostly peaceful, small groups clashed with police using rocks and flares, prompting tear gas and flash-bang grenades in response. These confrontations were brief.

Justice Demanded for 2023 Greece Rail Crash Victims

Protests also took place outside Greece, with about 500 people gathering at the Greek Embassy in London's Holland Park area. Demonstrations were held in Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Cologne, Helsinki, Nicosia, Reykjavik, and Valetta. Protesters carried placards and chanted phrases like "I have no oxygen," reportedly said by a victim who called the emergency services during the incident. In Thessaloniki, a placard accused the state and European Commission of having "blood on their hands."

Global Protests and Accusations

Pavlos Aslanidis, whose son was a victim, expressed his thoughts in Thessaloniki: "What is happening today is majestic," he said. "This is now a global fight," referring to international protests. He added, "My son's soul must be elated ... I believe we will win. We have the state ranged against us, but we will win." Marchers accused the government of concealing evidence and conducting an opaque investigation while blaming a stationmaster's decisions for the disaster.

The tragic collision occurred on February 28, 2023, when a northbound passenger train collided with a southbound freight train mistakenly placed on the same track. Anger over the deaths of mostly young people has fueled rumors about the accident. Some believe that at least 30 victims survived the initial crash but died in a fire allegedly caused by dangerous chemicals on the freight train. Accusations have been made against the government for hiding these chemicals' presence.

Investigation Delays and Legal Proceedings

A lengthy investigation and delays by technical experts in producing reports on what caused the fire after the crash have postponed a trial date. Greek media suggest that if there are no further delays, a trial could start in spring. Some victims' relatives accuse others of delaying proceedings by calling more witnesses among survivors. It is estimated that about 50-60 rail and other officials will face trial.

Maria Karystianou, whose daughter died in the crash, described it as "the most mafia-like cover-up operation" during protests outside Parliament in Athens. Karystianou has become prominent by organising events and petitioning the European Parliament while commenting on Greek politics through media appearances.

Political Impact and Government Response

Opposition parties hoped that the crash would damage the government's standing after it led to the transport minister's resignation. However, despite exposing safety equipment deficiencies in the rail system, it did not affect elections held in May and June 2023 where ruling conservatives expanded their majority. The opposition's attempt to pressure the government with a no-confidence motion last year also failed.

The ongoing protests highlight public dissatisfaction with how authorities handled this tragedy and its aftermath. Many continue to demand accountability and transparency from those responsible for ensuring railway safety.
