Pro-Palestinian Protesters Arrested in Sit-In Outside New York Stock Exchange

On Monday, approximately 200 individuals were detained during a protest against Israel's actions in Gaza. The demonstration took place outside the New York Stock Exchange, according to police reports. Protesters voiced their opposition with chants like "Let Gaza live!" and "Up up with liberation, down down with occupation!" in front of the iconic building in lower Manhattan.

Protesters aimed to highlight the US government's role in supplying bombs to Israel. Beth Miller, from Jewish Voice for Peace, stated, "The reason we're here is to demand that the US government stop sending bombs to Israel and stop profiting off of Israel's genocide against Palestinians in Gaza." She further explained that while communities in Gaza suffer, weapons manufacturers on Wall Street benefit financially.

Protest Details and Arrests

Despite their efforts, none of the pro-Palestinian demonstrators managed to enter the stock exchange. However, around 200 protesters breached a security barrier on Broad Street. They sat down and awaited arrest. Police officers detained them individually, using plastic ties to secure their hands behind their backs before escorting them to waiting vans.

A small group of counterprotesters attempted to disrupt the demonstration by waving Israeli flags and shouting over the pro-Palestinian chants. The New York Stock Exchange chose not to comment on the protest. A police spokesperson confirmed about 200 arrests but did not provide details on potential charges.

Regional Tensions and Recent Events

This protest occurred shortly after the world observed the anniversary of Hamas's unexpected attack on Israel on October 7. This event marked the beginning of Israel's retaliatory actions in Gaza, which have since extended into Lebanon and other areas.

In a related incident, an Israeli airstrike reportedly targeted an apartment building in northern Lebanon on Monday. The Lebanese Red Cross reported that at least 21 people were killed in this strike. The Israeli military has not commented on this incident, leaving the intended target unclear.

The protest outside the New York Stock Exchange underscores ongoing tensions surrounding the conflict in Gaza. Demonstrators continue to call for changes in US policy regarding military support to Israel amidst escalating regional violence.
