Pro-Palestinian Protesters Disrupt Traffic to Chicago O'Hare, Impacting Travel

Early on Monday morning, pro-Palestinian demonstrators significantly disrupted traffic leading to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the United States. The protesters, who blocked lanes on Interstate 190 around 7 am, aimed to draw attention to their call for an "economic blockade to free Palestine," as stated by organizer Rifqa Falaneh. This protest was part of a series of demonstrations that also affected the San Francisco Bay Area, where activists shut down the Golden Gate Bridge and a significant stretch of Interstate 880 in Oakland, causing extensive traffic delays.

OHare Traffic Halted by Protest

O'Hare International Airport advised travelers via the social platform X to seek alternative transportation methods due to substantial delays caused by the protest. Footage circulated on social media depicted some passengers deciding to walk to the airport, dragging their luggage along the freeway. Despite the inconvenience to travelers, the Chicago Department of Aviation reported that airport operations were minimally affected, with delays not exceeding 15 minutes. Traffic flow towards O'Hare resumed by approximately 9 am.

The demonstration led to dozens of protesters being detained by Chicago police, although specific details regarding the arrests were not immediately available. The choice of O'Hare for the protest was strategic, given its status as one of the largest airports, highlighting the demonstrators' demands, including an urgent call for a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Chicago has witnessed near-daily anti-war protests following an attack by Hamas on southern Israel on October 7, which resulted in approximately 1,200 fatalities. In response, Israeli forces have launched intensive military operations in the Gaza Strip. According to figures from the Gaza health ministry, these actions have led to over 33,700 Palestinian deaths. The ministry's casualty reports do not distinguish between civilians and combatants but indicate that women and children constitute two-thirds of those killed.
