Prince Harry, Meghan to Engage in Invictus Games Talks During Nigeria Visit

Prince Harry, alongside his wife Meghan, is set to visit Nigeria in May for discussions centered around the Invictus Games, an initiative he launched to support the recovery of injured and ill military personnel and veterans. This announcement was made by Nigerian defense spokesperson Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau. While the exact date of their arrival remains unspecified, it is known that the Duke of Sussex's journey to Africa will follow a commemorative service at London's St. Paul's Cathedral, marking a decade since the inception of the games.

Harry, Meghans Invictus Games Talks in Nigeria

Nigeria, having participated in last year's Invictus Games, is among the nations actively combating Islamic extremism in its northeastern regions since 2009. The games, inspired by the Warrior Games in the United States and established by Harry in 2014, aim to empower wounded veterans through competitive sports akin to the Paralympics. Harry's military service as an Apache helicopter copilot gunner in Afghanistan during 2012-2013 has fueled his advocacy for veterans requiring support.

The upcoming visit by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to Nigeria is anticipated to not only strengthen Nigeria's position within the games but also explore the nation's potential as a future host. Gusau highlighted that the visit would encompass cultural engagements alongside discussions about the games.

In a recent Netflix series focusing on the Invictus Games, Prince Harry shared personal challenges faced upon his return from Afghanistan in 2012, including struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder. He attributed these challenges to unresolved grief stemming from the loss of his mother, Princess Diana, when he was 12 years old. The prince also touched upon his well-documented difficulties with the royal family, noting that the impact of his mother's death was never openly addressed.

This visit underscores Prince Harry's ongoing commitment to supporting veterans worldwide and highlights Nigeria's active role and potential future contributions to the Invictus Games. As preparations for their visit continue, it remains a significant moment for both Prince Harry and Meghan in their efforts to foster international collaboration and support for wounded and sick servicemembers and veterans.
