Prime Minister Narendra Modi Gets A Grand Welcome From Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Cyprus marks a significant diplomatic engagement, being the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 23 years. His arrival on June 15 was met with ceremonial honours from President Nikos Christodoulides at Larnaca International Airport. This visit is part of a broader tour that includes Croatia and participation in the G7 Summit in Canada.

During his two-day stay, PM Modi will engage in high-level discussions with Cypriot leaders to strengthen ties in trade, technology, education, and cultural exchange. The visit underscores India's commitment to enhancing relations with European allies ahead of key global discussions at the G7 Summit.

Strengthening Economic Ties

The visit coincides with growing economic cooperation between India and Cyprus. Eurobank, one of Cyprus' largest financial institutions, has announced the opening of a representative office in Mumbai. This move aims to position Cyprus as a gateway for Indian businesses entering the EU and as a financial bridge linking Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia.

On June 16, PM Modi will receive a ceremonial welcome at the Presidential Palace. He will hold a private meeting with President Christodoulides and be awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III for his contributions to bilateral relations. Expanded talks will follow, focusing on boosting cooperation in economy, trade, infrastructure, investment, and EU-India ties.

Cyprus: A Strategic Ally

Cyprus has maintained strong support for India on global issues. Following an April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Cyprus condemned the incident and pledged to address cross-border terrorism at the EU level. The island nation is also a key link in the proposed India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), aimed at enhancing connectivity.

PM Modi's presence is seen as a diplomatic message to Turkey amid tensions over its support for Pakistan during 'Operation Sindoor.' The visit reflects India's strategic priorities and signals its stance against Turkey's actions in northern Cyprus.

High-Level Meetings

Modi's visit includes attending a roundtable with business leaders from both countries at Limassol port. Discussions will focus on enhancing bilateral trade and exploring new investment opportunities. This engagement highlights India's interest in strengthening economic ties with Cyprus.

Despite historical connections, visits by Indian Prime Ministers to Cyprus have been rare. Indira Gandhi visited in 1982 followed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2002. Modi's trip is seen as timely ahead of Cyprus assuming the EU Council Presidency in early 2026.

India supports a peaceful resolution to the Cyprus issue based on UN Security Council resolutions and international law while opposing Turkey's unilateral actions. Meanwhile, Cyprus advocates for India's aspirations on global platforms like securing a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
