Prague to Budapest Train Hits Bus in Slovakia: 5 Killed, 5 Injured
A train travelling from Prague to Budapest collided with a bus in southern Slovakia on Thursday. The accident left at least five people dead and five others injured, according to officials. The Eurocity train had over 100 passengers when it crashed shortly after 5 pm (1500 GMT) in Nove Zamky, as reported by the Slovak railway company ZSSK and local police.

The engine of the train caught fire following the collision, and the bus was severely damaged, railway officials stated. Slovak rescue services confirmed the fatalities and injuries. Interior Minister Matus Sutai Estok was en route to the accident site, police added. The main railway line connecting Bratislava with Budapest has been closed indefinitely.
Passenger Evacuation
More than 100 passengers stranded on the train were being transported by buses to Sturovo, a town near the Hungarian border, ZSSK said. Video footage from the scene showed the train's engine engulfed in flames. The bus involved in the collision was also heavily damaged.
President Peter Pellegrini, who was attending a European Union summit in Brussels, expressed his condolences to the victims' families. "I wish the injured a speedy recovery and thank the doctors and rescue teams for their work done," Pellegrini said. "I wish that such catastrophes would avoid Slovakia in the future."
The accident occurred on a major train route linking Slovakia's capital, Bratislava, with Budapest. The closure of this track is expected to cause significant disruptions until further notice. Emergency services were quick to respond, providing immediate assistance to those affected.
The cause of the collision is still under investigation. Authorities are working to determine how the train and bus came into contact on what is typically a busy route. The incident has raised concerns about railway safety in the region.
Efforts are ongoing to clear the wreckage and restore normal service on this crucial international rail link. The authorities have not yet provided an estimate for when the track might reopen.
The tragic event has prompted calls for improved safety measures on railways to prevent future accidents. As investigations continue, officials are urging caution and patience from travellers affected by the disruption.
Rescue teams and medical personnel have been praised for their swift response to the emergency. Their efforts have been crucial in managing the aftermath of this devastating incident.
The community in Nove Zamky is mourning the loss of lives while supporting those injured in this tragic event. Local authorities are coordinating with national agencies to provide necessary aid and support.
This accident highlights the importance of stringent safety protocols on public transport systems. Ensuring passenger safety remains a top priority for railway companies and government agencies alike.
The conclusion of this investigation will be critical in understanding what went wrong and how similar incidents can be prevented in future. Meanwhile, affected families and communities are receiving support during this difficult time.
