Powerful blast rocks Kabul; reason, casualties yet not known

Kabul, Nov 18: The Afghan capital was rocked by a powerful blast early on Tuesday, leading to a cloud of black smoke over the city just after sunrise.

The reason behind the blast and the extent of casualties were not known immediately.

Targets against foreign troops and Afghan government officials and security personnel have intensified in the wake of a thinning international military coalition in the war-ravaged country, leaving it mostly to Afghan forces to counter the Taliban.

The latest explosion took place in Pul-e-Charkhi district of eastern Kabul but there were initial reports on casualties, said police sources in Kabul.

The impact of the blast could be felt several kilometres away in the capital's central diplomatic district.
