Volcanic Fury: Popocatepetl Erupts, Causing Flight Chaos in Mexico City

Mexico's National Disaster Prevention Centre issued a warning on Wednesday regarding the recent eruptions of the Popocatepetl volcano, located just 50 miles from the country's capital. The volcano has erupted 13 times in the past day, prompting authorities to urge people to refrain from attempting to climb it due to the risk of debris shooting out of the crater.

Flight Disruptions and Airport Closures

The volcanic ash from Popocatepetl caused significant disruptions to air travel in Mexico. Mexico City's Benito Juarez International Airport, the country's largest, was affected, with at least 22 flights cancelled due to safety concerns. Volcanic ash was found in some planes during safety checks, leading to cancellations and rerouting of other flights to different parts of Mexico.

In Puebla, a city closer to the volcano, airport operations were temporarily suspended on Wednesday due to the presence of gas and fumes emanating from Popocatepetl. Airport personnel worked diligently to clean up the ash that had accumulated on the ground.

Safety Concerns and Potential Airport Closures

Mexico City's airport also issued a warning on Wednesday, stating that operations could be suspended due to the ongoing volcanic activity. The airport's official account on X, formerly Twitter, emphasized that safety in operations is their top priority and that they are continuously monitoring flight conditions.

The volcanic ash poses several safety concerns, particularly for aviation. It reduces visibility and can act as an abrasive, potentially damaging aircraft wings and fuselages. In airports, the ash can coat runways, causing logistical issues and posing risks to airport personnel.

History of Popocatepetl's Activity

Popocatepetl has been an active volcano for half a million years and has a history of regular eruptions. Last year, large eruptions caused alarm when nearby towns were covered in ash, but volcanologists downplayed the activity, stating that it was not unusual or surprising.

The volcano's last major eruption occurred more than a thousand years ago.
