Pope Francis: A 'Pro'-LGBTQ Progressive Pontiff Who Inspired Many While Unsettling Traditionalists
Pope Francis, renowned for his progressive reforms that inspired millions of Catholics and unsettled many traditionalists, passed away on Monday at the age of 88.
The Argentine pontiff, who had led the Catholic Church since March 2013, had been hospitalised at Rome's Gemelli hospital for 38 days due to a severe case of pneumonia.

Although he appeared to have recovered and was discharged on 23 March, he made a frail final appearance on the balcony of Saint Peter's Basilica just a day before his death, to the joy of the faithful celebrating Easter Sunday.
Throughout his papacy, Francis redefined Church doctrine on matters such as the death penalty and nuclear weapons, upheld conservative teachings on abortion, and worked to foster interfaith unity with Muslim communities and others historically marginalised by the Church.
Where did Pope Francis stand on key issues?
Abortion
Pope Francis maintained the Church's traditional opposition to abortion, describing it as part of a wider "throwaway culture" and even likening it to hiring a contract killer. However, he urged a compassionate approach rather than condemnation, encouraging the Church to spiritually support women who had undergone abortions. He empowered ordinary priests to forgive the sin-previously a power reserved for bishops-and opposed moves by U.S. bishops to deny Communion to President Joe Biden over his stance on abortion, insisting that clergy serve as spiritual mentors, not political enforcers.
LGBTQ inclusion
Francis made headlines with his "Who am I to judge?" comment regarding gay Catholics. He consistently expressed that LGBTQ individuals are loved by God and welcome in the Church. Though the Church's official doctrine remained unchanged, his papacy allowed same-sex blessings and recognised that transgender people could be baptised and participate in Church roles. In Argentina, he supported civil unions as a middle ground, despite opposing same-sex marriage.
Clergy abuse
His papacy was marked by the ongoing clergy sexual abuse scandal. Initially dismissing the allegations of Chilean victims, Francis later admitted his error, issued a personal apology, and accepted mass resignations from Chile's bishops. His most decisive action was defrocking U.S. Cardinal Theodore McCarrick. He revised Church law to lift pontifical secrecy in abuse cases and introduced protocols for holding bishops accountable, though critics questioned his consistency in handling accused clergy.
Death penalty and prison reform
Francis made a historic change by declaring the death penalty unacceptable in all circumstances. He also condemned life imprisonment without parole, calling it a "hidden death penalty," and decried solitary confinement as a form of torture. He advocated for both practices to be abolished.
Divorce and Communion
He generated debate by suggesting that divorced and civilly remarried Catholics might, in certain cases, be allowed to receive Communion. He simplified the annulment process and encouraged bishops to evaluate cases individually, subtly shifting long-standing doctrine.
Capitalism and economic justice
Francis was a staunch critic of global capitalism, arguing that economic systems often placed profit above human dignity. He denounced the idolisation of money, called for universal basic income and better labour rights, and argued that globalisation had worsened inequality. He famously said, "this economy kills," and insisted his views were rooted in Gospel values, not communism.
Priestly celibacy
While open to discussing priestly celibacy for Latin Rite clergy, Francis refrained from changing the rule, even in areas like the Amazon suffering from a shortage of priests. He said the issue had become overly politicised and didn't wish to be the pope to make such a significant change.
China relations
In 2018, Francis approved a controversial deal with China regarding bishop appointments, aiming to end a decades-long impasse and regularise bishops previously appointed without Vatican approval. Critics saw it as caving to the Chinese Communist regime, while the Vatican defended it as the only practical way forward.
Contraception
Francis upheld the Church's opposition to artificial contraception but emphasised responsible parenthood, famously saying that Catholics shouldn't "breed like rabbits." He endorsed natural family planning and hinted at leniency in certain situations, such as during the Zika virus outbreak, when he suggested contraception might be morally justifiable.
COVID-19 response
During the pandemic, Francis called for solidarity with the vulnerable and advocated societal reform in its wake. He strongly supported vaccination efforts, pushing for global equity and even backing vaccines developed using ethically contentious cell lines-prompting criticism from some conservatives.
Environment
Francis emerged as a leading advocate for environmental protection. His 2015 encyclical Laudato Si' linked climate change to human behaviour and condemned economic systems harming the planet and the poor. A 2023 update singled out the U.S. for its carbon emissions and warned of impending ecological catastrophe.
Indigenous peoples
Francis repeatedly apologised for the Church's role in colonial abuses, including at residential schools in Canada. He repudiated the "Doctrine of Discovery" and praised alternative mission models such as the Jesuit communities in Paraguay. However, he drew criticism for canonising Junipero Serra, a controversial figure among Native American groups.
Islam
Francis was a champion of Catholic-Muslim relations. He engaged with both Sunni and Shia leaders, signed a landmark document on human fraternity with Egypt's Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, and became the first pope to visit countries like the UAE and Iraq. His outreach promoted interfaith peace and mutual respect.
Migration
Migration was a cornerstone of his mission. He condemned global indifference to refugees, urging especially European countries to welcome them. His first papal visit was to Lampedusa to commemorate drowned migrants, and he brought several refugee families to the Vatican from camps in Greece and Cyprus. He decried border walls as un-Christian.
Nuclear weapons
Francis broke with past papal positions by declaring even the possession of nuclear weapons to be immoral-a significant departure from earlier Church acceptance of nuclear deterrence under strict conditions.
Vatican reform
Elected with a mandate to reform, Francis modernised Vatican finances, introduced proper accounting practices, centralised investments, and slashed cardinals' salaries. He also oversaw a high-profile trial over a botched real estate deal, underscoring his commitment to transparency and accountability.
Women in the Church
Francis advocated for more significant roles for women within Church structures. He appointed women to senior Vatican positions, allowed them voting rights in synods, and promoted studies on female deacons. He also elevated Mary Magdalene's liturgical standing. Nevertheless, he maintained the ban on female priests and ruled out ordaining women as deacons-at least for now.
