PM Modi Reaches Kyiv For Pivotal Meeting With Zelenskyy, Ukraine-Russia War High On Agenda
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Kyiv on Friday, marking the first time an Indian Prime Minister has visited Ukraine since its independence in 1991.
The visit occurs during a critical phase of the ongoing conflict, with Ukrainian forces still present in Russia's western Kursk region following their incursion on August 6, and Russian troops making slow but steady advances in Ukraine's east.

PM Modi's visit to Ukraine follows a "productive" two-day trip to Poland, where he engaged in extensive discussions with Polish leaders.
Modi, who is visiting Ukraine at the invitation of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, expressed his intentions to discuss a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
"I look forward to the opportunity to ... share perspectives on peaceful resolution of the ongoing Ukraine conflict," Modi stated before the trip.
"As a friend and partner, we hope for an early return of peace and stability in the region."
This visit is crucial for Kyiv, which has been working to strengthen diplomatic relations within the Global South as part of its efforts to achieve a fair settlement to the war.
Modi's trip to Kyiv comes shortly after his visit to Moscow in July, which coincided with a severe Russian missile strike on Ukraine that targeted a children's hospital.
While India has not condemned the Russian invasion, it has consistently advocated for resolving the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.
As the first global leader to be hosted by both Russia and Ukraine while they are at war, Modi's actions signal India's intention to serve as a bridge for peace rather than choosing sides.
This echoes his consistent message since 2022, first delivered to Russian President Vladimir Putin: "This is not the era of war."
Zelenskyy, who had earlier criticised Modi's visit to Moscow, is now welcoming the Indian PM to Kyiv.
Modi is expected to convey the same message to Zelenskyy as he did to Putin in July, asserting that "no solution can be found in the battlefield."
This diplomatic engagement comes just weeks before Modi's anticipated visit to the United States for the UN General Assembly, highlighting the importance of messaging and diplomatic posturing.
Modi and Zelenskyy have met three times in the last three years, with their most recent encounter taking place in June at the G7 Summit in Apulia.
The Indian PM's visit to Ukraine, the first by an Indian leader in over three decades, underscores India's commitment to diplomacy and dialogue in resolving global conflicts.
The Indian government has emphasised that its relationships with both Russia and Ukraine are independent and substantive, stating, "This is not a zero-sum game."
