PM Modi Arrives in Nigeria to Strengthen Bilateral Ties During Three-Nation Visit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Nigeria, marking the first visit by an Indian prime minister to the country in 17 years. Invited by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Modi was warmly received in Abuja by Minister for Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Ezenwo Wike. The minister presented Modi with the Key to the City of Abuja, symbolising trust and honour from the Nigerian people, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

Modi's visit to Nigeria is part of a five-day tour that includes Brazil and Guyana. After Nigeria, he will head to Brazil for the 19th G20 Summit as a Troika member. Leaders like Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden will also attend the summit in Rio de Janeiro on November 18-19. India is part of the G20 Troika alongside Brazil and South Africa.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
President Tinubu expressed his eagerness to welcome Modi, stating that their discussions aim to expand strategic partnerships and enhance cooperation in key sectors. "Welcome to Nigeria, Prime Minister Modi," Tinubu said in a post on X. Modi responded with gratitude, sharing images of his arrival and expressing hope for deepening bilateral friendship.
This visit marks Modi's first-ever trip to the West African Region. In his departure statement, he mentioned looking forward to meeting the Indian community and friends in Nigeria who have sent warm messages in Hindi. He sees this as an opportunity to strengthen their strategic partnership based on shared democratic values.
Upcoming Visits
Following his time in Brazil, Modi will travel to Guyana from November 19 to 21 at President Mohamed Irfaan Ali's invitation. This will be the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Guyana in over 50 years. The trip underscores India's commitment to strengthening ties with countries across different regions.
The MEA shared images of Modi's arrival in Nigeria on social media, highlighting the warm reception he received. The visit aims to bolster relations between India and Nigeria, focusing on enhancing cooperation across various sectors.
Modi's itinerary reflects India's growing engagement with global partners through strategic visits and participation in international summits. His presence at the G20 Summit signifies India's active role in global economic discussions alongside other major economies.
The prime minister's engagements during this tour are expected to reinforce India's diplomatic ties and promote collaboration on mutual interests with these nations. The visit is seen as a step towards building stronger relationships based on shared beliefs and common goals.
