Perdue Initiates Recall of Chicken Nuggets After Metal Wire Reports

Perdue Foods is recalling over 167,000 pounds of frozen chicken nuggets and tenders due to reports of metal wire found in the products. The recall affects specific lots of three items: Perdue Breaded Chicken Tenders, Butcher Box Organic Chicken Breast Nuggets, and Perdue Simply Smart Organics Breaded Chicken Breast Nuggets.

Perdue Recalls Chicken Nuggets

According to Perdue and the US Agriculture Department's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), approximately 167,171 pounds (75,827 kilograms) of these products may be contaminated with foreign material. This decision followed several customer complaints about the presence of metal wire in the chicken products.

Recall Details and Consumer Guidance

The affected products can be identified by their product codes listed on both Perdue and FSIS's online notices. They have a best buy date of March 23, 2025, and establishment number "P-33944" on the back of the package. These items were distributed nationwide.

Consumers who possess these recalled chicken products are advised to discard them or return them to the place of purchase. Perdue is offering full refunds to affected customers who can contact the company at 866-866-3703.

Company Response and Safety Measures

Jeff Shaw, Perdue's senior vice president of food safety and quality, stated that the material was "identified in a limited number of consumer packages." He explained that the company determined the material to be a very thin strand of metal wire inadvertently introduced during manufacturing. Shaw added that Perdue decided to recall all impacted packages "out of an abundance of caution."

As of Friday, there have been no confirmed injuries or adverse reactions from consuming these products, according to FSIS and Perdue. However, FSIS remains concerned that these items may still be in consumers' freezers.

Historical Context and Broader Implications

Foreign object contamination is a leading cause of food recalls in the US today. In November last year, Tyson Foods recalled nearly 30,000 pounds (13,600 kilograms) of chicken nuggets after consumers found metal pieces in dinosaur-shaped products. Besides metal, other materials like plastic fragments, rocks, and bits of insects have also led to recalls by contaminating packaged goods.

The recall announcement from Maryland-based Perdue highlighted that the material was "identified in a limited number of consumer packages." This discovery prompted the company to take immediate action to ensure consumer safety.

The FSIS and Perdue have urged consumers to check their freezers for these products. The now-recalled tenders and nuggets can be identified by specific product codes listed on both Perdue's and FSIS's online notices.

The recall underscores the importance of stringent quality control measures in food manufacturing processes. Companies must remain vigilant to prevent such incidents from occurring and ensure consumer safety.

This incident serves as a reminder for consumers to stay informed about product recalls and take necessary precautions when purchasing food items. Ensuring that recalled products are not consumed is crucial for maintaining public health.

The proactive steps taken by Perdue demonstrate their commitment to addressing potential safety issues promptly. By recalling all impacted packages, they aim to prevent any harm to consumers.

Consumers are encouraged to stay updated on food safety alerts and recalls through official channels like FSIS's website. This helps them make informed decisions about the products they purchase and consume.
