Pentagon Refutes Claims of Resumed Counterterrorism Activities in Niger
The Pentagon denied restarting counter-terrorism operations in Niger, contradicting statements made by Gen. James Hecker at a security conference. Current missions were clarified to be for force protection purposes only.
The Pentagon has clarified that it has not recommenced counterterrorism operations in Niger, contradicting previous statements made by Gen. James Hecker, the head of US airpower for Europe and Africa. This announcement came on Thursday, a day following Gen. Hecker's assertion during a security conference that some manned aircraft and drone counterterrorism activities had resumed in Niger.
Contradicting Statements

In response to a query from The Associated Press at the security conference on Wednesday, Gen. Hecker stated that the US military had been able to restart some manned aircraft and drone counterterrorism missions in Niger. However, this was promptly refuted by an official statement from the Pentagon on Thursday which emphasized that these missions were solely for protecting US forces rather than conducting broader counterterrorism operations with the Nigerien military as they have done successfully in the past.
Pentagon's Clarification
"Stories to the contrary are false," said Sabrina Singh, Pentagon spokeswoman at a press briefing on Thursday while clarifying their stance on ongoing operations in Niger. She further explained: "We are just flying ISR - intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance - in order to monitor any threats." Reiterating her point she added: "We are flying ISR for force protection purposes and that’s it."
Current Situation In Niger
Niger has been undergoing political turmoil since its president was overthrown by a military junta towards late July this year. Following this upheaval, approximately 1,100 US forces stationed there have been confined within their respective military bases.
Implications Of Resumed Flights
The news about resumption of certain flights was perceived as an encouraging sign indicating successful diplomatic efforts undertaken by State Department with the new regime in Niger. It is seen as potentially paving way for future collaborations and operations, despite the Pentagon's insistence on their current limited scope of activities.
In conclusion, while Gen. Hecker's statement suggested a return to broader counterterrorism operations in Niger, the Pentagon has clarified that current missions are limited to ISR flights aimed at protecting US forces stationed there amidst ongoing political instability. The situation underscores the complex dynamics of international military cooperation and highlights how rapidly changing geopolitical circumstances can impact strategic decisions and their communication.
