Evacuations in France: Palace of Versailles, Airports Closed for Security Reasons
The Palace of Versailles and three airports in France were evacuated for security reasons on Wednesday, the latest in a spate of evacuations in the past five days.
In a recent spate of security threats, the Palace of Versailles and three airports in France were evacuated on Wednesday. The evacuations come after a series of similar incidents in the past five days. The former royal chateau of Versailles apologized to visitors for the inconvenience, stating that the evacuation was necessary "for security reasons." The tourist attraction later reopened after security checks.
Evacuations and Security Checks

This marks the third time in the past weekend that the Palace of Versailles has had to evacuate visitors. Meanwhile, airports in Lyon, Toulouse, and Lille received emailed threats on Wednesday, leading to their temporary closure. However, all three airports have since reopened to passengers and staff following security checks.
These evacuations are part of a larger trend of security alerts across France, including the Louvre Museum in Paris. The Louvre and the Chateau of Versailles were both evacuated on Saturday, and the former royal palace was evacuated again on Tuesday.
Government Response
Government spokesman Olivier Veran emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant but not gripped by fear in response to the multiple security alerts and evacuations. He stated that terrorists aim to terrorize and that vigilance is crucial. Veran also highlighted the need to avoid fear and psychosis. Security alerts are evaluated on a case-by-case basis in coordination with the police.
The prefecture for the Lyon region reminded the public that communicating false information can result in imprisonment and a heavy fine.
Other Incidents
In the Riviera city of Nice, an abandoned piece of luggage caused a brief disruption at the airport. Additionally, the high school in Arras, where a teacher was murdered by a suspected Islamist terrorist, was evacuated on Monday as a precautionary measure.
It is unclear whether the recent security threats are linked to the fatal stabbing of the teacher or the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip. In response to the heightened threat level, France has deployed an additional 7,000 soldiers to join the 3,000 already patrolling French streets. These forces are tasked with guarding Jewish places of worship, schools, train stations, and other sensitive areas.
The anti-terrorism prosecutor revealed that the suspect in the fatal stabbing declared his allegiance to the so-called Islamic State group before the attack.
The recent spate of security threats and evacuations in France highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the country in ensuring public safety. While the authorities work to address these threats, it is crucial for the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security measures. By staying informed and following official guidelines, citizens can contribute to a safer and more secure environment for all.
