On Saturday night, internet users in Pakistan encountered significant interruptions, coinciding with a virtual event organized by the former prime minister's Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) on social media platforms. The party had announced that its virtual event would commence at 8 pm, the exact time when internet users began experiencing outages and slow internet speeds.
PTI Blames Government for Internet Issues
PTI promptly acknowledged the problem and attributed it to government interference. In a message, the party stated, "Reason why the Internet is not working, this is happening blatantly with no regrets whatsoever with a loud & clear message to the world that this illegal government doesn't care a bit about fundamental human rights or right of free speech."
Nationwide Disruption Confirmed
Dawn reported that internet monitor Netblocks confirmed a nationwide disruption to social media platforms. The internet tracking agency stated at 7:12 pm, "Confirmed: Live metrics show a nation-scale disruption to social media platforms across Pakistan, including X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube." Netblocks further noted that the incident coincided with the launch of the second virtual gathering of Imran Khan's political party, PTI.
Similar Disruption During Previous Virtual Event
This is not the first time PTI has faced internet disruptions during a virtual event. On January 7, the party experienced similar issues when it held a virtual fundraising telethon.
PTA Rejects Complaints
In response to the complaints, a spokesperson for the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) denied any disruptions and asserted that all social media networks were active. The PTA also stated that it had not received any complaints regarding internet issues.
The internet disruptions during PTI's virtual event have raised concerns about freedom of speech and access to information in Pakistan. While the PTA has denied any involvement, the timing of the disruptions suggests a deliberate attempt to hinder the party's online activities.
