Pakistan Peoples Party And Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Form New Coalition Government

In a significant development, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have reached an agreement to establish a new coalition government in Pakistan, putting an end to days of intense negotiations. The announcement was made during a joint news conference late on Tuesday night by PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif.

Shehbaz Sharif to Assume Prime Ministership, Asif Zardari to Become President

According to Bhutto-Zardari, the PPP and PML-N have secured the required number of seats to form the government. He highlighted that former Prime Minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party-backed candidates and the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) fell short of achieving a simple majority to form the government at the Centre.

Unity Between PPP and PML-N Emphasized

Speaking at the news conference, Shehbaz Sharif expressed gratitude to the leadership of both parties for the positive conclusion of the talks. He emphasized the unity between the PPP and PML-N, stating that they are well-positioned to form the government at the Centre. This announcement comes after the latest round of talks between the top leaders of the two parties ended inconclusively on Monday, as they failed to reach a consensus on a power-sharing formula.

Challenges Ahead for the New Government

Sharif acknowledged that the journey ahead for the new government will be challenging, filled with difficulties and obstacles. However, he asserted that the coalition alliance will tackle these challenges together. The general elections in Pakistan have been marred by controversies, with serious allegations of widespread rigging to alter the results.

Coalition Government Formed Despite PTI's Victory

Despite independent candidates backed by former Prime Minister Imran Khan's party winning the maximum number of seats in Parliament, the PML-N and PPP have joined forces to form a coalition government. Independent candidates secured 93 National Assembly seats, while the PML-N won 75 seats and the PPP came third with 54 seats. The Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) has also agreed to support the coalition with their 17 seats. To form a government, a party must secure 133 seats out of the 265 contested seats in the 266-member National Assembly.

The formation of the PPP-PML-N coalition government marks a significant development in Pakistan's political landscape. With Shehbaz Sharif set to become the Prime Minister and Asif Zardari poised to assume the role of President, the new government faces the daunting task of addressing the country's numerous challenges, including economic instability, political polarization, and security concerns. The success of the coalition government will depend on its ability to navigate these challenges effectively and work towards the betterment of Pakistan and its citizens.
