If on the one hand, the Oscars celebrate the best of cinema every year, on the other, the Hollywood's biggest film event also remembers the icons from the world cinema who have died.
On Sunday night, during the 90th Academy Awards ceremony, along with various well-known film personalities from Hollywood, who have died in the recent times, veteran Indian actor Shashi Kapoor and India's first female superstar Sridevi were remembered during the "In Memoriam" montage.
A musical tribute by Eddie Vedder was paid to all the departed souls from the cinema world. Vedder sang Tom Petty's Room at the top at the Oscars to remember the deceased film personalities.
Hollywood actress Jennifer Garner introduced the segment by paying tribute to late star Audrey Hepburn. "There is no joy without sorrow," Garner said, and then acknowledged the loss of film world with the departed souls.
Shashi Kapoor started his career as a child artist. His debut film as an adult was Bollywood drama, Dharmputra, in 1961. He passed away in December 2017. He was the son of Prithviraj Kapoor and younger brother of Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor. All three of them died before Shashi Kapoor.
Shashi Kapoor, known for his cute smile and charming personality, also worked in some well-known international film projects. He was honoured with the Padma Bhushan--the third highest civilian honour--by the Indian government in 2011. In 2015, he was bestowed with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
India is still mourning the death of Sridevi, who died on February 24 at a hotel in Dubai. The superstar was an icon. Sridevi was known for her acting and dancing skills. She too started her career as a child artist and grew up to become one of the best actresses of all time. She died at the age of 54. Sridevi was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2013.
The other deceased stars who were remembered at the Oscars were John Heard, Tony Anne Walker, Jane Foray, Robert Osborne, Martin Landau, Glenne Headly, Roger Moore, George A Romero and Jerry Lewis, among others.
