Nikki Haley Secures First Primary Victory, Trump Bested In Washington DC
The Washington, D.C., Republican primary was won on Sunday by presidential contender Nikki Haley, marking her first victory in the nominating process and symbolizing a triumph for the former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, as reported by Edison Research.
Haley, the sole remaining challenger to Donald Trump in the race, garnered 62.9% of the vote, compared to the 33.2% secured by the former president.

Despite her win in America's capital city, she still faces near-impossible odds in her bid to secure the Republican nomination to challenge likely Democratic nominee President Joe Biden in November. Trump emerged victorious in the first eight nominating contests by substantial margins before being defeated by Haley.
Opinion polls indicate that the former president is also anticipated to emerge victorious in nearly all upcoming nominating contests. Washington, D.C., is entirely urban, with a relatively high percentage of residents holding college degrees. Trump's core support base tends to be rural, and he enjoys significant strength in regions with lower educational attainment, as reported by Reuters.
Furthermore, the city houses a considerable number of federal workers whom Trump allies have pledged to dismiss en masse and replace with loyalists if he prevails in November. Certain categories of federal workers have witnessed an increase in death threats in recent years, and Trump frequently refers to the D.C. area as the "swamp."
From her triumph, Haley will acquire 19 delegates, constituting a small fraction of the 1,215 delegates required to secure the nomination. Her victory may shield her from criticisms suggesting she is incapable of winning a single nominating contest, although some Republicans may view her popularity in Washington unfavourably. Numerous party leaders, including Trump, depict the city as crime-ridden and under the control of out-of-touch elites, as reported by Reuters.
This is not the first instance in which Republicans in the capital have rebuffed Trump. During the previous competitive Republican nominating contest in the District of Columbia in 2016, Trump received less than 14% of the vote and obtained no delegates, despite ultimately securing the national nomination.
On Tuesday, voters in 15 states and one U.S. territory will caucus or participate in the largest day of nominating contests in the presidential primary, known as Super Tuesday, where 874 Republican delegates will be at stake. The Democratic primary in Washington will take place in June, as reported by Reuters.
