Nigerian Gasoline Tanker Explosion Results in Rising Death Toll of 86
A gasoline tanker explosion in north-central Nigeria has resulted in 86 fatalities, according to the country's emergency response agency. The incident occurred early Saturday near Suleja in Niger state when individuals attempted to transfer fuel from a crashed tanker using a generator. This action led to an explosion, killing those involved in the transfer and nearby onlookers.

Hussaini Isah from the National Emergency Management Agency informed the Associated Press that 55 additional people were injured. These individuals are currently receiving medical care at three hospitals in the Suleja area. "There were people who were burnt to ashes. How can we get that figure," Isah stated, suggesting that the actual death toll might exceed 86. He noted that without forensic analysis, determining the exact number is challenging.
Gasoline Prices and Public Response
The blast attracted a large crowd, including those taking photos and others attempting to collect gasoline. This contributed to the high number of casualties. In Nigeria, collecting fuel from overturned tankers is common as some see it as a chance to obtain free gasoline for personal use or resale.
Gasoline prices in Nigeria have surged following the removal of subsidies by President Bola Tinubu's administration over a year ago. The policy aimed to redirect resources towards developmental projects but has led to significant economic hardship for many citizens.
Challenges in Casualty Assessment
The explosion's aftermath highlights the risks associated with such practices, especially given the current economic climate. The removal of fuel subsidies has made gasoline more expensive, prompting some individuals to resort to dangerous methods for acquiring it.
Isah emphasized that the exact number of victims remains uncertain due to the severity of burns sustained by some individuals. He indicated that forensic investigations are necessary to determine precise casualty figures.
The tragic event underscores the need for increased safety measures and public awareness regarding the dangers of handling fuel improperly. As authorities continue their investigation, efforts are being made to prevent similar incidents in the future.
