Philanthropist Nicole Shanahan Selected as Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s Vice Presidential Candidate
In a strategic move that has caught the attention of political observers nationwide, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has chosen Nicole Shanahan, a California lawyer and philanthropist with no prior experience in elected office, as his vice-presidential running mate for his independent presidential bid. The announcement was made in Columbia, South Carolina, on March 27, marking a significant step in Kennedy's campaign.

Shanahan, 38, is not widely known beyond the tech circles of Silicon Valley, yet she brings a blend of youth, wealth, and a commitment to various social causes to Kennedy's campaign. As the leader of the Bia-Echo Foundation, Shanahan has directed funds towards critical issues such as women's reproductive science, criminal justice reform, and environmental sustainability. Her background also includes a fellowship at Stanford University and founding ClearAccessIP, a patent management firm sold in 2020.
The choice of Shanahan is particularly noteworthy given her recent marriage to Google co-founder Sergey Brin, which lasted from 2018 to 2023. The couple shares a young daughter. Raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Shanahan's selection was announced by Kennedy in her home region.
Before this announcement, Amaryllis Fox Kennedy, the campaign manager and Kennedy's daughter-in-law, lauded Shanahan for her dedication to honest governance, racial equity, regenerative agriculture, and health issues affecting children and mothers. These areas reflect some of the nation's most pressing needs.
In an interview with The State of California on KCBS radio, Kennedy emphasized his vice-presidential search focused on representing younger demographics. He highlighted that Shanahan shares his concerns over government overreach and skepticism towards the major political parties' ability to enact meaningful change.
Kennedy's selection process had previously hinted at potential candidates from various fields, including sports and entertainment. However, Shanahan's long history of donating to Democratic candidates before switching to support Kennedy's independent campaign underscores a significant political shift.
Shanahan's financial contributions to Kennedy's efforts have already been substantial. She was the primary donor behind a Super Bowl ad supporting Kennedy, contributing USD 4 million through the pro-Kennedy super PAC American Values 2024. Despite legal restrictions preventing direct coordination with Kennedy's team, her role as a vice-presidential candidate allows her to contribute unlimited funds directly to the campaign.
This financial capability could prove crucial for Kennedy's ambitious goal to secure ballot access in all 50 states—a task estimated to cost USD 15 million and necessitate over a million signatures. Shanahan's involvement brings not only financial resources but also a fresh perspective to Kennedy's long-shot bid for the presidency.
