New York braces for protests ahead of Donald Trump surrender

The New York City police have set up metal barriers around Trump Towers and blocked roads near the Manhattan Criminal Court House as they brace for a protests ahead of Donald Trump expecting to surrender to prosecutors on Tuesday.

Trump is set to be arranged at the court house on Tuesday afternoon, following his indictment in a grand jury over hush money paid to a porn star. Trump, incidentally is the first former US president to face criminal charges.

Trump has described the probe as a political witch hunt. Top Republican lawmakers like Marjorie Taylor Greene have said that they will go to New York to protest. The downtown court house, home to criminal and Supreme Court, will shut down some courtrooms ahead of the surrender.

The New York police have said that there are no potential threats to the city.

Some social media users have called for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and the jury that indicted Trump to be executed, Site Intelligence Group, which monitors online extremism said.

Trump's supporters online have expressed wariness about public demonstrations, even after Trump called for them, concerned they could be arrested.

"The department remains ready to respond as needed and will ensure everyone is able to peacefully exercise their rights," NYPD said in a statement.

Trump who is in Florida is expected to fly to New York and stay at the Trump Tower, before his potential surrender on Tuesday.

The New York Young Republican Club says that it is planning a protests at a park across the street from the court house. Greene, one of Trump's staunchest supporters has said that she would attend the protest.

"Protesting is a constitutional right," Greene said on Twitter. She added that she would protest this unprecedented abuse of the justice system and election interference. Greene also said that she rejects anyone who incites or commits violence.

The grand jury had evidence of a $130,000 payout to adult film actress Stormy Daniels in the waning days of the 2016 presidential campaign. Daniels whose real name is Stephanie Clifford said that she was paid to keep silent about a sexual encounter she had with Trump in 2006. Trump has however denied the allegation.
