Nepal’s PM KP Sharma Oli Breaks Tradition With First China Visit, Shifting Diplomatic Focus

Nepal's Prime Minister, KP Sharma Oli, has commenced a four-day official visit to China, marking a departure from the usual diplomatic practices of Nepali leadership.

Traditionally, after assuming office, Nepalese prime ministers make India their first destination. However, Oli's decision to visit China first has drawn considerable attention, particularly from Indian media outlets, as reported by The Global Times.

Nepal s PM KP Sharma Oli Breaks Tradition With First China Visit Shifting Diplomatic Focus

Oli, who has visited China twice before as Nepal's Prime Minister, is known for strengthening the China-Nepal relationship. During his current visit, he is scheduled to meet with top Chinese officials, including President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang, and Chairman of the National People's Congress, Zhao Leji, as reported by The Global Times.

The two countries' leaders are expected to discuss enhancing bilateral relations, expanding cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, and exploring opportunities in trade, cultural exchanges, and regional issues of mutual interest. A statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry highlighted that the visit aims to deepen strategic trust and expand practical cooperation between China and Nepal, particularly within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative. This cooperation is expected to benefit both countries in areas such as trade, infrastructure development, and education.

On December 4, a high-level economic and trade event will take place in Beijing, coinciding with Oli's visit. The China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) has noted that Nepal has become an increasingly attractive destination for Chinese investments. In recent years, the relationship between the two nations has seen remarkable growth, with closer ties in various sectors.

Oli is also scheduled to address audiences at Peking University and participate in the Nepal-China Business Forum. His visit comes at a time when Nepal's relationship with China, particularly its involvement in the Belt and Road Initiative, has been a subject of domestic and international scrutiny, as per media reports.

Indian media outlets have been closely monitoring Oli's visit, with reports labelling him as a "pro-China leader." The media's attention on the visit stems from Oli's break with tradition, as Nepali leaders typically visit India first after assuming office. Some outlets have speculated that Oli may have not received an invitation from New Delhi, further fueling discussions on Nepal's growing ties with China.

The shift in Nepal's diplomatic trajectory is significant, especially considering the tensions that arose in 2015 when India imposed sanctions on Nepal, including a blockade of oil and gas supplies. The sanctions prompted Oli to seek closer ties with China, culminating in his historic visit to Beijing in 2016, as per media reports. Analysts believe that Oli's decision to prioritize China this time reflects broader trends in South Asian geopolitics, where countries are increasingly looking to strengthen ties with China.

Oli's delegation for the visit includes Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba, Chief Adviser Bishnu Prasad Rimal, and Economic Adviser Yuba Raj Khatiwada, along with parliamentarians, senior officials, and business leaders.

As Nepal deepens its cooperation with China, Oli's visit is seen as a reflection of the shifting dynamics in South Asia, where China's influence continues to grow. The outcomes of this visit will likely have significant implications for Nepal's foreign policy and its strategic positioning in the region.
