Klein and Ganeshananthan Awarded Women's Prize for Literary Excellence

Author-activist Naomi Klein has been awarded the first-ever Women's Prize for Nonfiction for her work "Doppelganger," a detailed exploration of her experiences with online misinformation, paralleled by the confusion between her and Naomi Wolf. This accolade is accompanied by a prize of £30,000 (approximately $38,000). The Women's Prize for Fiction was bestowed upon U.S. author V. V. Ganeshananthan for "Brotherless Night," a narrative set against the backdrop of Sri Lanka's prolonged civil conflict, also carrying the same monetary reward.

Klein, known for her influential books "No Logo" and "The Shock Doctrine," in "Doppelganger," subtitled "A Trip into the Mirror World," combines memoir with investigative journalism to scrutinize the impact of digital life on reality. She probes into the potential measures to address these distortions. Suzannah Lipscomb, leading the nonfiction award's judging panel, praised Klein's work as a "courageous, humane and optimistic call-to-arms."

Ganeshananthan's "Brotherless Night," her second novel, offers a poignant look into the life of an aspiring medic navigating through the horrors and ethical dilemmas of warfare. It took nearly two decades to bring this story to fruition. Monica Ali, who chaired the fiction award's judging panel, lauded the novel as a profound testament to the personal and widespread tragedies borne out of Sri Lanka's civil war.

The introduction of the nonfiction award in 2023 aims to address the gender disparity prevalent in the publishing industry, particularly in nonfiction writing and recognition. Data from 2022 highlighted that only 26.5% of nonfiction books reviewed in British newspapers were authored by women, with male authors predominantly winning established nonfiction writing awards.

Both awards are open to female English-language writers globally, underscoring an inclusive approach towards celebrating literary achievements across borders. The fiction prize, established in 1996, has recognized authors such as Zadie Smith, Tayari Jones, and Barbara Kingsolver in previous years.
