Naim Kassem Elected as New Leader of Hezbollah Following Hassan Nasrallah's Death

Hezbollah has appointed Naim Kassem as its new leader following the death of Hassan Nasrallah in an Israeli airstrike. The decision was made by the group's Shura Council, which pledged to continue Nasrallah's policies "until victory is achieved." Kassem, who has been a public figure for Hezbollah, lacks Nasrallah's oratory skills but is a founding member of the group.

Naim Kassem Becomes Hezbollahs New Leader

Kassem's appointment comes amid ongoing tensions with Israel. Israel's Defence Minister Yoav Gallant commented on X, calling Kassem's role a "temporary appointment," hinting at further actions against him. Kassem has been sanctioned by the US, which labels Hezbollah a terrorist organisation. He had served as Nasrallah's deputy for 32 years and often represented Hezbollah in media.

Hezbollah's Strategic Moves

In early October 2023, Hezbollah began attacking Israeli military positions along the Lebanon border. This move was in support of Hamas after militants stormed Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking hostages. The conflict escalated into a prolonged war between Israel and Hamas, with significant casualties reported in Gaza.

The conflict has expanded into Lebanon, causing widespread destruction and displacing over 1.2 million people. Israeli forces are engaged in intense battles with Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. Despite this, Hezbollah continues to launch rockets into northern Israel and recently claimed attacks on an Israeli military base and Prime Minister Netanyahu's residence.

Kassem was born in 1953 in Kfar Fila, southern Lebanon. He studied chemistry at Lebanese University and taught the subject while pursuing religious studies. In the 1970s, he joined the Movement of the Dispossessed, advocating for Shiite representation in Lebanon. This group later became the Amal movement during Lebanon's civil war.

Hezbollah's Internal Dynamics

Kassem joined Hezbollah after its formation in 1982 with Iranian support following Israel's invasion of Lebanon. He became deputy leader under Abbas Mousawi until Mousawi's assassination by Israel in 1992. Kassem's leadership follows the death of Hashem Safieddine, another potential successor to Nasrallah, killed in an Israeli strike.

Safieddine was closely linked to Iran and related to Qassem Soleimani, a key Iranian military figure killed by a US strike in 2020. Hezbollah expressed hope for divine assistance for Kassem in his leadership role. The group also faced setbacks when communication devices exploded in September, killing 39 and injuring nearly 3,000 members.

Qassim Qassir, an analyst close to Hezbollah, stated that Kassem’s appointment indicates that Hezbollah remains self-reliant despite reports of Iranian influence. In July, Kassem expressed doubts about Israel launching a full-scale war against Hezbollah but warned against any limited operations.

Hezbollah claims its military strength remains intact despite recent losses. Kassem warned that any conflict initiated by Israel would not remain limited. He emphasised Hezbollah’s commitment to supporting Hamas despite the risks involved.

The situation remains tense as both sides continue their military engagements. The future of the region hangs in balance as international observers watch closely for developments that could impact broader geopolitical dynamics.
