Bangkok, Thailand - Airstrikes conducted by Myanmar's military on a village controlled by pro-democracy resistance forces in the country's northwest have resulted in the deaths of at least 17 civilians, including nine children, according to local residents and a human rights group.

Deadly Airstrikes in Myanmar: Civilian Lives Lost

Morning Aerial Attacks

The aerial attacks targeted Kanan village in Sagaing region's Khampat town, situated near the Indian border. The morning airstrikes not only claimed the lives of innocent civilians but also left approximately 20 individuals injured.

Escalating Violence

Myanmar has been embroiled in violence since the military's ouster of the elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021. The brutal suppression of peaceful demonstrations led many opponents of military rule to take up arms, resulting in widespread conflict across the country.

Government Denial

Independent online media outlets and the BBC's Myanmar-language service reported the air attack, but the military government swiftly denied responsibility. They dismissed the reports as "false news" propagated by Khit Thit Media, an independent online news service sympathetic to the anti-military resistance.

Airstrikes Against Enemies

In recent years, the military government has intensified airstrikes against two primary adversaries: the armed pro-democracy People's Defense Force and ethnic minority guerrilla groups seeking greater autonomy. These groups occasionally collaborate in joint operations against the army.

Accusations and Evidence

In response to accusations of human rights abuses, the military government frequently accuses pro-democracy forces of carrying out violent campaigns of terror. However, analysts from the United Nations and non-governmental organizations have gathered substantial evidence of large-scale human rights violations by the army, including the burning of entire villages and the displacement of nearly 2 million people, leading to a humanitarian crisis.

Sagaing Region: A Stronghold of Resistance

Sagaing region, bordering India, has emerged as a stronghold of armed resistance against the military. In recent months, a coalition of resistance forces and the Kachin Independence Army, a powerful ethnic rebel group, have captured a district capital and two small towns, including Khampat.

Eyewitness Accounts

A local resident involved in rescue efforts provided details of the attack to The Associated Press. According to the eyewitness, a jet fighter dropped three bombs on Kanan village, located on the outskirts of Khampat, killing 17 civilians near the village school. The majority of Khampat town's residents belong to the Chin ethnic minority, predominantly Christian, in contrast to Myanmar's predominantly Buddhist population.

Possible Explanations

The resident suggested a possible explanation for the attack, noting that a ceremony marking the completion of combat training for new resistance force members was scheduled at another school in the village. This could have been the intended target, potentially compromised by a military informer.

Deliberate Attack

Another resident, speaking on condition of anonymity due to security concerns, confirmed the deaths of nine children and the injuries of 20 others. Photographs provided to the Associated Press depicted the aftermath of the attack, including casualties and damaged buildings.

Salai Mang Hre Lian, a program manager of the Chin Human Rights Organization, corroborated the number of victims and condemned the military's deliberate attack on civilians and children at the school. He emphasized the international community's responsibility to prevent such war crimes and violations of international humanitarian laws.

Escalated Airstrikes

The military's intensified airstrikes follow a major offensive launched by an alliance of three ethnic minority armed groups in late October. These groups seized towns in the country's northeast, along with key border crossings for trade with China.

Resistance Forces' Victory

In a significant victory for the resistance forces, the army was forced to relinquish control of Laukkaing city in northern Shan state, near the Chinese border. Meanwhile, reports from the Myanmar Pressphoto Agency and Shan media indicate that an airstrike on Namhsan township, recently captured by the Taang National Liberation Army, resulted in the deaths of at least five individuals, including three teachers.

The ongoing violence and human rights abuses in Myanmar continue to raise concerns and underscore the urgent need for international attention and action to address the crisis.
