Musk's Political Shift: From Left Liberal To Alt-Right In Trump's Administration

Elon Musk has emerged as one of the most influential and controversial figures within the new Trump administration. He spent at least US$277 million (around A$360 million) of his own wealth to support Donald Trump's re-election campaign, travelling across the country alongside him.

This substantial financial and time investment raises the question of what Musk, the world's wealthiest individual, expects to gain in return.

Elon Musk and Donald Trump

Critics have speculated whether Musk's backing of Trump is a straightforward commercial arrangement, with Musk anticipating political favours, or if it reflects Musk's personal political beliefs and possible political ambitions.

From Left to Alt-Right

Musk's political views are complex and difficult to pin down, largely by design. His current feed on X presents a confusing mix of far-right conspiracy theories on immigration, clips from neoliberal economist Milton Friedman warning about inflation, and advertisements for Tesla.

Historically, Musk described himself as a left libertarian, stating that he voted for Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012, Hillary Clinton in 2016, and Joe Biden in 2020. However, Musk claims that the Democratic Party has shifted further left over time, which has led him to feel more aligned with the Republican Party.

A key factor in Musk's political shift, according to his own account, is his estrangement from his transgender daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson. After her transition, Musk controversially claimed that she was "dead, killed by the woke mind virus", though she is very much alive. Since then, he has repeatedly opposed transgender rights, gender-affirming care, and diversity, equity, and inclusion policies.

However, Musk's political shift can better be understood as part of a broader movement known as the "libertarian to alt-right pipeline". Rather than being driven solely by changes within the Democratic Party, Musk's politics seem to be a reflection of a broader trend in the libertarian movement, which has increasingly aligned with far-right ideologies.

The Political Science

Libertarianism traditionally encompasses both left-leaning and right-leaning strands. Left libertarians support limited government and economic deregulation while advocating for progressive social policies like marriage equality and drug decriminalisation. Right libertarians share the same economic views but hold conservative social stances, such as opposing abortion rights and celebrating nationalism.

In recent years, libertarianism in the United States has leaned more to the right, with many libertarians actively participating in the alt-right movement, which opposes multiculturalism, gender equality, and diversity, and supports white nationalism. The alt-right is an internet-driven movement, often using trolling and controversial content to provoke outrage and attract attention.

Making Sense of Musk

Musk's values align with limited-government libertarianism in economic terms. He advocates for reducing government spending, lowering taxes, and repealing regulations-particularly those that affect his businesses. His formal role in the Trump administration as head of the "Department of Government Efficiency", or DOGE, is intended to advance these goals.

Musk has suggested that, as part of his government efficiency efforts, he will focus on cutting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, reflecting alt-right influences. On X, Musk has also engaged with white nationalists and promoted racist conspiracy theories, such as the "Great Replacement" theory and the "Muslim grooming gangs" conspiracy.

Whether Musk genuinely believes these conspiracies is secondary; his online behaviour seems to be part of a deliberate alt-right populist strategy designed to provoke, upset the left, and then claim victimhood when criticised.

Theory vs Practice

While Musk's public statements align with libertarian ideals, there are contradictions when it comes to putting these ideas into practice. Despite advocating for limited government, Musk's companies have benefited from significant government subsidies and support.

Musk also opposes immigration but has argued for the continuation of H1-B skilled worker visas, a move that has angered some white supremacists. These visas allow temporary workers to enter the US for up to six years and are often used in the tech sector, benefiting companies like those owned by Musk and Trump.

An Unsteady Alliance

What can we expect from Musk now that he holds political office and wields influence? His goal of cutting $2 trillion from the US budget seems unlikely, but he is likely to focus on creating controversy by cutting DEI initiatives and other politically sensitive programs, such as support for women's reproductive rights.

Musk will undoubtedly use his political position to serve the interests of his companies. Following Trump's re-election, shares in Tesla surged, signalling that investors expect Musk to benefit financially from the second Trump administration.

Musk will also continue to leverage his public influence, which may lead to conflicts with Trump himself. He has already fallen out with Vivek Ramaswamy, who will no longer co-lead DOGE with Musk.

If the alliance between Trump and Musk persists, it will likely play a key role in the rise of a "new gilded age" characterised by political corruption and growing inequality.
