Authorities have confirmed the driver has been apprehended and does not pose an ongoing threat. However, details regarding his identity and motive remain unclear. Reports indicate that at least 15 people were injured, though official figures are yet to be confirmed. The incident has raised concerns due to the presence of global leaders, including U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who are scheduled to attend the conference.

Recalling Previous Attacks in Munich

Munich has witnessed several violent incidents in recent decades, ranging from terror attacks to lone-wolf assaults.

1. 2016 Munich Shopping Mall Shooting

On July 22, 2016, an 18-year-old German-Iranian named David Sonboly opened fire at a McDonald's and inside the Olympia Shopping Mall, killing nine people and injuring 36 others before taking his own life. The attack, initially suspected to be linked to terrorism, was later determined to be inspired by right-wing extremist ideology and mass shootings.

2. 2016 Munich Train Station Axe Attack

In May 2016, a 27-year-old German man attacked passengers at Grafing Train Station, killing one person and injuring three others with an axe and knife. Initial reports suggested a terrorist motive, but investigations later confirmed the attacker had severe mental health issues.

3. 2017 Munich Knife Attack

On October 21, 2017, a 33-year-old German man randomly attacked people with a knife at multiple locations near Rosenheimer Platz, injuring eight individuals before being arrested. The attacker was later found to be suffering from psychological disorders.

4. 1980 Oktoberfest Bombing
One of Munich's deadliest attacks occurred on September 26, 1980, when a far-right extremist, Gundolf Köhler, detonated a bomb at the entrance of the Oktoberfest festival, killing 13 people and injuring over 200 others. Investigations later linked him to neo-Nazi groups, confirming a politically motivated attack.

5. 1972 Munich Olympics Massacre

The Munich Olympics Massacre on September 5-6, 1972, remains one of the most infamous terrorist incidents in history. The Palestinian militant group Black September took 11 Israeli athletes hostage at the Olympic Village, demanding the release of Palestinian prisoners in Israel. A failed German rescue operation led to the deaths of all hostages and five terrorists at Fürstenfeldbruck Air Base.

While Thursday's incident has not been linked to terrorism, Munich's history of violent attacks adds to the tension surrounding the city, particularly with the Munich Security Conference set to begin on Friday. Authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the crash while maintaining heightened security in the area.
