Conflicting Reports on Mpox Cases in Pakistan: Federal Government Confirms Just One

On Friday, confusion arose in Pakistan regarding the confirmed number of mpox cases. A federal official reported only one case, contradicting provincial reports of three cases. Health Ministry spokesperson Sajid Shah stated that the single confirmed patient is from Mardan district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Provincial Reports and Testing

Provincial officials had earlier reported three mpox cases, all from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a region bordering Afghanistan. Salim Khan, the director general of health services for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, mentioned that two patients were detected upon arrival from the United Arab Emirates. The third patient's samples were sent to the National Health Institute in Islamabad for confirmation.

Shah noted that it remains unclear which variant of mpox the confirmed patient has until testing is complete. This uncertainty adds to the confusion surrounding the actual number of cases and their specifics.

Government Response and Precautions

The Ministry of Health issued an advisory on Thursday to strengthen screening systems at airports and entry points. Dr Mukhtar Ahmed Bharath, Prime Minister's Coordinator for Health, stated that federal hospitals have been instructed to take precautionary measures. The Ministry of Health and Border Health Services are on high alert to handle any situation.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the mpox outbreak in parts of Africa as a cause for international concern and a public health threat. The disease, previously known as monkeypox, has resulted in at least 450 deaths in Congo.

Understanding Mpox

Mpox is caused by the monkeypox virus, which belongs to the same group of viruses as smallpox but is less harmful. Initially transmitted from animals to humans, it can now also spread between humans.

The Pakistani government continues to monitor the situation closely and implement necessary measures to prevent further spread. The focus remains on identifying the exact strain of the virus and ensuring robust screening processes at all entry points.

Efforts are being made to clarify the discrepancies in reported cases and provide accurate information to the public. As testing progresses, more details about the virus strain and its impact are expected to emerge.
