Mossad Chief Vows to Hunt Down Hamas Members Behind Israel Attack

The head of Israels Mossad intelligence agency has vowed to hunt down every Hamas member involved in the October 7 attack on Israel, following the killing of a senior Hamas figure in Beirut.

The chief of Israel's Mossad intelligence service, David Barnea, made a solemn pledge on Wednesday to relentlessly pursue every Hamas member involved in the October 7 attack on Israel, regardless of their location. This declaration came a day after the deputy head of the Palestinian militant group, Saleh Arouri, was killed in a suspected Israeli strike in Beirut, Lebanon.

Echoes of the Munich Massacre

Barnea drew a parallel to the aftermath of the 1972 Munich Massacre, when Mossad agents meticulously tracked down and eliminated Palestinian militants responsible for killing Israeli athletes at that year's Olympic Games. He emphasized that Mossad is committed to bringing justice to those who orchestrated the recent attack on Israel.

Heightened Tensions with Hezbollah

The strike in Beirut has placed Israel on high alert for a potential escalation with Lebanon's powerful Hezbollah militia. Hezbollah and the Israeli military have been engaged in frequent exchanges of fire across the Israeli-Lebanese border since the war in Gaza began. The killing of Arouri, the most senior Hamas member slain since the Gaza conflict erupted, adds another layer of complexity to the already tense situation.

Hezbollah's Response

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, who has led the group since 1992, is expected to deliver a speech on Wednesday evening. His response to the killing of Arouri will be closely scrutinized, as he has previously vowed to retaliate for any Israeli targeting of allied militant leaders in Lebanon.

Morale Boost for Israelis

Despite the ongoing resistance from Hamas militants in Gaza and the continued hostage situation, the elimination of Arouri has provided a morale boost for Israelis. Barnea reaffirmed Mossad's commitment to pursuing everyone involved in the October 7 attack, both directly and indirectly, including planners and envoys.

Focus on Gaza

While tensions simmer on the Lebanese border, the primary focus remains on the war in Gaza. Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant declared Israel's pursuit of a "clear victory" over Hamas, which has governed the territory since 2007. The Israeli military's assault on Gaza has resulted in the deaths of over 22,300 people, mostly women and children, according to the Health Ministry in the Hamas-ruled territory.

Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

The ongoing conflict has caused widespread devastation in Gaza, with approximately 85% of the population displaced from their homes. Hundreds of thousands of people are seeking refuge in overcrowded shelters or tent camps in Israeli-designated safe areas, which have also been subjected to military strikes. The United Nations has warned that a quarter of Gaza's population is facing starvation due to Israeli restrictions and heavy fighting that hinder aid delivery.

Mediation Efforts

Egypt, along with Qatar, has been mediating between Israel and Hamas in an attempt to end the war. A multistage plan has been proposed, involving the release of all hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. This would be followed by an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and the establishment of a government of Palestinian technocrats to govern Gaza and parts of the occupied West Bank until elections are held. While neither Israel nor Hamas has fully accepted the plan, they have not outright rejected it either. An Israeli delegation is currently in Cairo to discuss the proposal, but the killing of Arouri is expected to temporarily hinder the negotiations.
