Milan Malpensa Airport to Bear Silvio Berlusconi's Name in Tribute

Silvio Berlusconi, a former cruise-ship singer, media tycoon, and three-time Italian premier, is set to have Milan's Malpensa Airport renamed in his honour. Italy's transport minister announced the change on Thursday, following the civil aviation authority's approval. The airport will now be known as Milan-Malpensa Silvio Berlusconi International Airport.

Malpensa Named for Berlusconi

Despite the official decision, the proposal faced significant opposition. Milan's centre-left Mayor Beppe Sala was firmly against it, and unions suggested naming the airport after Carla Fracci, La Scala's renowned prima ballerina. However, Transport Minister Matteo Salvini, a long-time ally of Berlusconi from Italy's centre-right, confirmed the renaming.

Italy's Airports Named After Famous Figures

Several major airports in Italy bear the names of historically significant Italians. Rome's Leonardo da Vinci Airport, Venice's Marco Polo Airport, and Verona's Valerio Catullo Airport are examples. The renaming of Malpensa continues this tradition by honouring Berlusconi.

Berlusconi passed away last year at 86 due to chronic leukemia. He was Italy's longest-serving premier and had a polarising legacy. Some admired him as a charismatic leader who elevated Italy's global presence, while others criticised him for using political power for personal gain.

Malpensa Airport's Significance

Malpensa is Italy's second-busiest passenger airport, handling 26 million passengers last year. In comparison, Rome's Leonardo da Vinci Airport saw 40 million passengers, according to Assaeroporti, the Italian association of airport operators. Located in Italy's industrial heartland, Malpensa excels in cargo transport, moving 672,000 tons last year compared to Rome's 190,000 tons.

"A great satisfaction for a great Italian," Salvini stated in a social media post regarding the renaming decision. This move aligns with Italy’s practice of naming airports after notable figures from its history and culture.

The renaming of Milan-Malpensa Airport to honour Silvio Berlusconi reflects his lasting impact on Italian politics and society. While controversial, his influence remains significant enough to warrant such recognition.
