Migrant Boat Tragedy Near Samos Island Claims Lives of Eight, Including Six Children

Eight individuals, including six children, lost their lives when a small boat carrying migrants capsized near the Greek island of Samos. The exact number of people on board remains unknown. In a separate incident on another island, an elderly man died as 27 migrants landed safely. No one was reported missing from this group, according to the coast guard.

Tragic Sinking of Migrant Boat Near Samos

The coast guard reported that 36 survivors from the Samos incident were discovered on a rocky shoreline, with three others rescued earlier. The nationalities of those on the boat are still unidentified. A search operation involving a patrol vessel, lifeboat, navy ship, helicopter, and land crews is ongoing to locate any potential missing persons.

Migrant Smuggling Concerns

Greece's Minister for Migration, Nikos Panagiotopoulos, expressed sorrow and anger over the tragedy. He vowed to intensify efforts against migrant-smuggling networks. "The shipwreck on Samos, with the loss of eight innocent lives, including six children, fills us with sadness and anger," he stated. "The unscrupulous criminals who trade in human lives will meet with our determination to eradicate their activities."

Samos and other islands in the eastern Aegean Sea are crucial transit points for migrants entering the European Union illegally from Turkiye. Recent months have seen an increase in migrant crossings, attributed by Greek officials to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.

Rising Migrant Crossings

On Monday, the coast guard also reported the death of an elderly man during the disembarkation of 27 migrants on Lesbos island. The remaining 26 migrants were found in good health. The cause of the man's death remains unclear.

According to United Nations data, over 54,000 people have entered Greece illegally by sea or land this year. Most arrivals are via small boats from Turkiye. However, there has been a rise in Mediterranean crossings from Libya, which poses a longer and riskier journey.

In 2023 alone, nearly 49,000 people have arrived in Greece illegally. This highlights the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in managing migrant flows and ensuring safety at sea.
