Michigan GOP Chair Testifies on False Elector Scheme

Former Michigan GOP chair Laura Cox testified about a document she approved stating that Republican electors would cast votes for Donald Trump if the 2020 election results were overturned. The document was intended to be ceremonial and required a triggering event such as a court overturning Joe Bidens win.

In a significant development, Michigan's former state GOP chair, Laura Cox, testified on Thursday, revealing her approval of a document stating that the state's Republican electors would cast votes for then-President Donald Trump if the 2020 election results were overturned. However, Cox emphasized that this document was ceremonial and required a triggering event, such as a court overturning Joe Biden's win.

Michigan GOP Chairs Testimony Sheds Light on False Elector Scheme

Preliminary Hearing Underway

Cox's testimony came on the second day of a preliminary hearing in the case against 15 Republicans facing charges, including forgery, for allegedly serving as false electors. The hearing follows the testimonies of a state police captain and Michigan's elections director on Wednesday.

False Elector Document Signed

Investigators allege that the group signed a document during a meeting at the Michigan GOP headquarters on December 14, 2020, falsely claiming they were the state's "duly elected and qualified electors." Cox confirmed that discussions about assembling a slate of Republican electors began early that December, and she approved another document created by her counsel.

Document's Purpose and Intent

Cox explained that the document she approved was intended to "at least" make "the Trump campaign comfortable that we were doing our part." Her document was signed by Kathy Berden, a Michigan committeewoman for the Republican National Committee.

Defendants' Response

The defendants, including former and current party officials, activists, and officeholders, have maintained their innocence, asserting that their actions were not illegal. Despite President Joe Biden's clear victory in Michigan by nearly 155,000 votes, confirmed by a GOP-led state Senate investigation in 2021, the defendants have remained steadfast in their defiance.

Nationwide Trend of Fake Electors

Michigan is not alone in facing this issue. Fake electors in six other battleground states also sent certificates to Congress falsely declaring Trump the winner of the 2020 presidential election, despite confirmed results showing his loss. Last week, Nevada became the third state to charge electors, following Michigan and Georgia. Meanwhile, Republicans who served as false electors in Wisconsin reached a legal settlement, acknowledging Biden's victory and admitting their efforts were part of an attempt to improperly overturn the 2020 results.

Court Proceedings and Next Steps

The preliminary hearings in Michigan involve the judge determining if there is sufficient evidence to substantiate the charges against the defendants. The six defendants who appeared in court on Wednesday are having their cases heard together, while the remaining eight will have preliminary examinations at later dates.

The ongoing legal proceedings shed light on the efforts by certain individuals to undermine the integrity of the 2020 presidential election. As the hearings progress, the outcome will have implications for accountability and the upholding of democratic processes.
