Mehul Choksi’s Whereabouts No Secret: Belgium 'Fully Aware' Of Fugitive Presence, Keeps A Close Watch
The Belgian government has acknowledged that it is aware of fugitive Indian businessman Mehul Choksi's presence in the country, emphasizing that the case is being closely followed.
David Jordens, spokesperson for Belgium's Federal Public Service (FPS) Foreign Affairs, confirmed the development while responding to inquiries about Choksi's whereabouts, ANI reported.

"I can confirm that FPS Foreign Affairs is aware of this case and considers it significant. However, we do not comment on individual cases. Additionally, this matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Federal Public Service Justice," David Jordens said.
Although Belgian authorities are monitoring the situation, the justice department holds primary authority over any legal proceedings related to Choksi. Jordens further assured that FPS Foreign Affairs remains engaged in tracking updates regarding the case but did not disclose Choksi's exact location.
Meanwhile, Antigua and Barbuda's Foreign Minister, E.P. Chet Greene, had previously clarified that Choksi had left the island for medical treatment but remains an Antiguan citizen.
"Mehul Choksi is not in Antigua. I was informed that he traveled abroad for medical reasons. However, he continues to be a citizen of Antigua and Barbuda. Our governments are collaborating on this matter while upholding democratic principles and the rule of law," Greene told ANI.
He added that Choksi's legal status remains under review, and no further comments could be made until a final decision is reached.
Reports have suggested that Choksi has been living in Antwerp, Belgium, with his wife, Preeti, after securing residency using allegedly misleading documentation to avoid extradition to India. Additionally, sources indicate he may be planning a move to Switzerland for treatment at a specialized cancer hospital.
Meanwhile, Indian authorities have reportedly urged Belgium to initiate extradition proceedings, as per a report by the Associated Times. However, New Delhi has yet to confirm this officially.
Choksi is a key accused in the ₹13,500 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) loan fraud case, along with his nephew, Nirav Modi. While Choksi has remained overseas, Nirav Modi is currently jailed in London and has been repeatedly denied bail as he fights extradition to India.
