Mexican Mayors Request Federal Protection After Colleague's Beheading in Guerrero

Four mayors in Mexico have sought federal protection following the beheading of a fellow mayor in Guerrero. Mayor Alejandro Arcos was killed shortly after taking office. Federal Public Safety Secretary Omar Garcia Harfuch confirmed that the mayors requested protection on Monday, a day after Arcos' remains were discovered. The requests came from Guerrero and Guanajuato, both regions plagued by violence.

Violence in Guanajuato

Guanajuato has seen significant violence, with four mayoral candidates killed before the June elections. The situation is dire, prompting local leaders to seek federal assistance. Garcia Harfuch did not specify the reasons behind the mayors' protection requests. He also provided limited information about the investigation into Arcos' murder.

Arcos had expressed concerns about his safety to local media, stating he needed more protection. However, Garcia Harfuch noted that no formal request for additional security had been made by Arcos. State and federal authorities can provide mayors with bulletproof vehicles, extra bodyguards, and emergency alert systems.

Drug Gangs in Chilpancingo

The state capital, Chilpancingo, is controlled by two rival drug gangs: the Ardillos and the Tlacos. In 2023, one gang staged a protest involving hundreds of people. They hijacked an armoured vehicle, blocked a major highway, and took police officers hostage to demand the release of detained members.

In Mexico, drug cartels and gangs often target mayors to enforce demands for extortion payments or influence over government contracts. They also seek to appoint their associates to municipal police forces. This ongoing threat underscores the need for increased security measures for local officials.

The recent events highlight the persistent danger faced by public officials in certain Mexican states. The federal government is urged to address these security concerns promptly to ensure the safety of elected leaders and maintain public order.
