Many Palestinians Express Hesitation to Return to Wrecked Homes in Rafah Amidst Ongoing Challenges

Many Palestinians in Rafah, Gaza, are reluctant to leave shelters and return to their devastated homes. The city has turned into a ghost town with no water or level ground, according to Hussein Barakat. "We wanted to come back to put up a tent during the ceasefire. As you can see, it has become a ghost town. There is no water. There is nothing. There is even no levelled ground you can stay on," he said.

Footage from The Associated Press depicted residents using their hands to sift through debris. Youssef al-Sharqawi searched for clothing for his five children, including an infant struggling with the cold nights. The lack of basic necessities like water and electricity makes returning home challenging for many displaced individuals.

Challenges in Returning Home

Mohammed al-Ballas, another displaced resident of Rafah, highlighted the difficulties of returning without essential services. He pointed out the collapsed buildings and destroyed roads, indicating that there was no space even for a tent. "Even if you tried to tie up an animal here, it will not live," he remarked.

The destruction in Rafah has left many without options but to remain in shelters. The absence of basic infrastructure and services poses significant challenges for those considering returning to their former homes.

As the situation remains dire, displaced residents continue to face uncertainty about when they might safely return home. The ongoing lack of resources and infrastructure adds to their hesitation and struggle.
