Illinois Landlord Sentenced to 53 Years for Hate Crime Murder of Palestinian-American Boy and Attack on His Mother

A 73-year-old Illinois landlord, Joseph Czuba, received a 53-year prison sentence for the murder of a 6-year-old Muslim boy and the severe injury of the boy's mother. The attack occurred shortly after the conflict in Gaza began. Czuba was convicted in February for murder, attempted murder, and hate-crime charges related to the death of Wadee Alfayoumi and the wounding of his mother, Hanan Shaheen.

During the trial, evidence included Shaheen's emotional testimony and her urgent 911 call. Graphic crime scene photos and police videos were also presented. Jurors reached a verdict in less than 90 minutes. The family had been renting rooms in Czuba's home in Plainfield, approximately 64 kilometres from Chicago, when the incident took place.

Hate Crime Motivated by War

Czuba targeted the family in October 2023 due to their Islamic faith and as a reaction to the Israel-Hamas conflict. His ex-wife, Mary Czuba, testified that he became agitated about the war days before the attack. Prosecutors highlighted Shaheen's testimony, where she recounted Czuba's insistence that they leave because they were Muslim.

Police reported that Czuba used a knife from his belt to stab Wadee 26 times, leaving the weapon in the child's body. Some crime scene images were so disturbing that screens displaying them were turned away from the audience. "He could not escape," stated Michael Fitzgerald, a Will County assistant state's attorney during the trial.

Community Impact and Legal Proceedings

The attack intensified fears of anti-Muslim discrimination, especially in Plainfield and nearby suburbs with significant Palestinian populations. Wadee's funeral attracted large crowds, and local officials dedicated a park playground in his memory. The jury deliberated for just 90 minutes before delivering their verdict.

Czuba remained silent throughout the trial. His defense team claimed there were inconsistencies in the case. Public defender George Lenard did not comment before sentencing. Illinois law stipulates a minimum prison term of 20 to 60 years or life for such crimes. The state does not have capital punishment.

Aftermath and Legal Actions

Shaheen suffered over a dozen stab wounds and needed weeks to recover. She testified that there were no prior issues during her two-year tenancy with the Czubas, sharing common spaces like the kitchen and living room. However, after the war began, Czuba demanded they move out because Muslims were unwelcome.

Shaheen recounted how Czuba attacked her, holding her down and attempting to break her teeth while stabbing her. "He told me 'You, as a Muslim, must die,'" she testified through an interpreter. Police found Czuba outside his home with blood on his hands and body.

Lawsuits have been filed regarding Wadee's death, including one by his father, Odai Alfayoumi, who was divorced from Shaheen and not residing with them at the time. Additionally, the US Department of Justice initiated a federal hate crimes investigation into the incident.
