Man arrested for defacing Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in Johannesburg

Cape Town, April 13: A man in his early twenty has been arrested for allegedly defacing the statue of the Mahatma Gandhi in Johannesburg, media reported on Monday.

The 21-year-old man was arrested on Saturday afternoon after a policeman noticed him painting the statue plaques with white paint, News24 reported citing Gauteng police spokesperson Kay Makhubele as saying.

Gandhi's statue was installed in Gandhi Square in central Johannesburg.

"He was found while painting the statue with paint and also there were some boards, on which he wrote ‘Gandhi statue must go'," said official.

The accused apparently covered the statue plaques with white paint and was making his way up the body of the statue when police apprehended him.

He was set to appear before Johannesburg Magistrate's Court for malicious damage to property on Monday.
