Pro-India Opposition Claims Victory in Maldives Mayoral Election

The pro-India opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) achieved a landslide victory in the capital Males Mayoral election, electing Adam Azim as the new mayor. This win is seen as a revival of the MDPs political standing, despite President Mohamed Muizzus recent state visit to China.

In a significant setback for Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, the pro-India opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) achieved a resounding victory in the capital Male's Mayoral election on Saturday, January 13.

MDP Candidate Elected as New Mayor

The MDP candidate, Adam Azim, emerged as the new mayor of Male, succeeding Muizzu, who had resigned from the position to contest the presidential elections last year. Azim's victory was hailed as a "landslide" and "victory by a large margin" by the Maldives media.

MDP Led by Pro-India Former President

The MDP is led by pro-India former president Mohammad Solih, who was defeated by Muizzu, a pro-China leader, in the presidential elections. With 41 ballot boxes counted, Azim secured a substantial lead with 5,303 votes, while his rival Aishath Azima Shakoor of Muizzu's People's National Congress (PNC) obtained 3,301 votes, as reported by Maldives' Sun Online news portal.

Low Voter Turnout

Despite the significant victory, the mayoral election was marked by a relatively low voter turnout, according to reports. Nevertheless, the MDP's triumph is expected to revitalize the party's political standing, as it still holds a majority in the Parliament.

Muizzu's China Visit and Diplomatic Tensions

Muizzu returned to Male on Saturday after concluding a five-day state visit to China. The mayoral polls were held against the backdrop of a diplomatic row between Maldives and India, triggered by derogatory comments posted by three deputy ministers of the Muizzu government against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During his visit to China, Muizzu sought to strengthen Maldives' ties with Beijing.

Suspension of Ministers and Tourist Concerns

In response to the social media postings that caused concern in India, Muizzu suspended the three ministers responsible. The incident led to calls for a boycott of Maldives by Indian tourists, who constitute the largest group of visitors to the country, followed by Russian tourists. Chinese tourists rank third in terms of arrivals.

The MDP's landslide victory in Male's Mayoral election marks a significant development in Maldives' political landscape. As the pro-India opposition party regains momentum, it remains to be seen how these dynamics will shape the country's future relations with India and China.
