Malaysia: Tourists detained for causing earthquake?
Kuala Lumpur, June 11: As bizarre as it seems, the Malaysian authorities had a solid ground for detaining four tourists in Malaysia who posed naked on the country's highest mountain.
Locals believe that the deadly earthquake that happened last week was caused by them.
A 6.0 magnitude earthquake had struck the Borneo island last week, causing landslides on Mount Kinabalu that killed 18 people.
Officials put the entire blame on the 10 tourists who reportedly posed naked for a photo, which angered the mountain gods.
People from the local tribe-Kadazan Dasun-said that their ancestors lived on the mountain and were angered by the outrageous behaviour of the tourists.
While several of the tourists fled the country, despite instructions from the authorities not to leave, four were detained.
23-year-old Eleanor Hawkins was detained at the Tawau airport when she was trying to board the plane.
According to the Malay mail, later on Tuesday, Dutch tourist Dylan Snel, 23, and Canadians Lindsey Petersen and his sister Danielle turned themselves in to Malaysian police.
Their lawyer Ronny Cham said that the tourists may be charged with public obscenity and given three months in jail.
