After Putin Meeting, Trump Hints ‘Big Progress On Russia’

US President Donald Trump hinted at a major development concerning Russia through a brief message on his Truth Social account. "Big progress on Russia, stay tuned," he wrote, without elaborating further. This message followed his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, sparking speculation about potential security guarantees for Ukraine.

The discussions between Trump and Putin reportedly included the possibility of offering Ukraine NATO-style security assurances. Steve Witkoff, Trump's envoy, mentioned that Putin showed openness to this idea for the first time. "We got to an agreement that the United States and other European nations could effectively offer Article 5-like language to cover a security guarantee," Witkoff stated.

Potential Breakthroughs in Ukraine Conflict

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested that the Trump-Putin meeting might have discussed elements that could advance efforts to end the war in Ukraine. While he cautioned against expecting an immediate resolution, Rubio noted, "I'm not saying we're on the verge of a Russia-Ukraine peace deal, but we saw enough movement to justify a follow-up meeting with President Zelenskyy."

Rubio also warned that if peace cannot be achieved, "there will have to be additional consequences for Russia." He emphasized the ongoing US efforts to help end Russia's war in Ukraine but acknowledged that success is not guaranteed. In an interview with CBS's Face the Nation, Rubio remarked on the limits of diplomacy in this situation.

European Support for Ukraine

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet Trump in Washington on Monday. He will be accompanied by leaders from Britain, Germany, and France. These European leaders aim to bolster Zelenskyy's position as Trump encourages Ukraine to accept a swift peace agreement.

Ahead of this meeting, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer held talks on Sunday. They focused on securing strong security guarantees for Ukraine and discussed a potential US role in these efforts.

Proposals for Territorial Adjustments

According to sources cited by Reuters, Trump and Putin explored a proposal involving territorial adjustments. Under this plan, Russia would relinquish small portions of occupied Ukrainian territory in exchange for Ukraine conceding a larger section of fortified land in the east. The remaining front lines would remain unchanged.

Zelenskyy emphasized that peace talks should begin based on the current front lines of the conflict with Russia. Speaking in Brussels on Sunday, he called for real negotiations starting from where the front line is now. A ceasefire is seen as essential before negotiating a final deal.

The meeting between US and Russian leaders concluded without any agreement to halt Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. This leaves European governments considering how to further pressure the Kremlin. The two presidents spoke for three hours but did not reach any major breakthrough to end the conflict causing widespread destruction in Ukraine.

This was also Putin's first visit to Western soil since ordering the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The post by Trump came shortly after Rubio suggested that discussions during their meeting had potential for breakthroughs regarding ending the war.

Zelenskyy stressed the importance of Washington's support during negotiations: "It's important that Washington is with us," he said. European leaders share his view and support his call for a ceasefire as an initial step towards achieving lasting peace.
