A man went on a shooting spree in Lewiston in Maine on Wednesday, killing at least 16 people at a bowling alley and restaurant, sparking a massive police manhunt.
An extensive manhunt, mobilizing hundreds of law enforcement officers, is in progress following the devastating shootings that rocked this community of roughly 38,000 residents.

- The accused is identified as Robert Card, 40, of Bowdoin. Police have scheduled a press conference for 10:30 am ET even as the manhunt to capture him is on.
- He is a firearms instructor who received training from the US military at a facility located in Saco, Maine, as indicated in a state police bulletin obtained by CBS.
- The bulletin further mentioned that he had been at a mental health facility during the summer of 2023 and had made threats about carrying out a shooting at the military base.
- The Lewiston shootings occurred at both a bowling alley and Schemengees Bar & Grille, as reported by the Police Department on Facebook. Justin Juray, one of the bowling alley's owners, described the situation there as "utter chaos." The bowling alley is approximately four miles away from the bar.
- "None of this seems real, but unfortunately it is," Just-In-Time Recreation wrote on their Facebook page. "We are devastated for our community and our staff. We lost some amazing and whole hearted people from our bowling family and community last night. There are no words to fix this or make it better. We praying for everyone who has been affected by this horrific tragedy. We love you all and hold you close in our hearts."
- Maine State Police took to Facebook to urge residents to protect themselves. "ALERT: There is an active shooter situation in the city of Lewiston. Law enforcement is asking people to shelter in place. Please stay inside your home with the doors locked. Law enforcement is currently investigating at two locations right now. Again please stay off the streets and allow law enforcement to diffuse the situation. If you see any suspicious activity or individuals please call 911," the post says.
- The Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office has issued images of the suspected individual holding a firearm. "Law enforcement in Androscoggin County are investigating two active shooter events. We are encouraging all businesses to lock down and or close while we investigate. The suspect is still at large," it wrote on Facebook.
- On Thursday, President Biden issued a proclamation directing that all US flags be displayed at half-staff at the White House, military installations, and all federal buildings in tribute to the victims of the tragedy in Lewiston, Maine, until October 30th.
- On Wednesday evening, the White House issued a statement in which President Biden "spoke by phone individually to Maine Governor Janet Mills, Senators Angus King and Susan Collins, and Congressman Jared Golden about the shooting in Lewiston, Maine and offered full federal support in the wake of this horrific attack."
- Over 200 institutions, including several schools, in Maine have remained closed on Thursday. Central Maine Community College, Bates College and the University of Southern Maine-Lewiston were all closed as well.
